Rydges North Sydney
Ranked #6 of 10 Hotels in North Sydney
Reviewed November 23, 2012

This was our second stay at Rydges North Sydney. The hotel is one of the older ones in the group and shows its age. Staff works hard to please the guests but the wear and tear does not help them. One morning there was no hot water: "air bubbles getting in the way" was the explanation..... Our level button in the lift (10) did not light up after pushing and after we got from the ground floor to level 2 we went back to G... Only after repeated pushing the button responded.... Wired (ethernet) internet did not work in our room so we could not use the router we normally use in all other Rydges hotels to connect our laptop, phones and iPad. Wireless internet though was OK although not really fast.
The balcony of our suite shows its age and if we were easlily scared we wouldn't dare to stand on it because of the cracks in the concrete. We could get on it, but the door didn't open all the way....
Enough about the wear and tear. Apart from our room only being made up after three pm (without replenishing the supplies, like tea and sugar) staff is very friendly, helpful. The lobby and restaurant are nicely decorated, the bar is cosy and the Mundo restaurant serves excellent meals with prompt and friendly service.
The location is ideal for a visit to the CBD: public transport around the corner with many buses taking you right into the centre of Sydney and back.
Hopefully they'll do the hotel up a bit as we certainly intend to come back.

Room Tip: "City-Harbour" view rooms are more expensive but offer a nice view of the eastern suburbs...

“Air bubbles in the pipes” is not acceptable and we will not rest until this problem is resolved, my sincere apologies and assurance that we’re working to resolve this issue.

Same goes for the faulty lift button and internet port, we now have wireless but I gather this did not help with your Router, we’re checking all the Suites to see which one is the issue.

Thanks for the kind remarks regarding the staff, as you generously mentioned we’re working hard to make each guest feel at home & looked after. Your photo of the food at dinner was great, the Kingfish Ceviche (the national dish of Peru) is my favourite, and I hope you enjoyed it too.

Please visit us again soon.

On the third floor, the two room suite was tired, very tired, and in urgent need of a face lift.

The suite had lots of windows, sadly no views to speak of as luckily the huge trees hid the industrial setting at the back of the Hotel.

The main room was large and well lit, and the beds large and comfortable.

Unfortunately the only mirror in the place was in the bathroom, not "full length" and the bedside light system was not good, and had sharp edges.

One point worth noting though, everything was clean, the housekeeping staff everyday made sure of that, the bar staff and room service were polite and attentive.

The water for shower and bath was very brown, and the pressure very disappointing, reducing to a trickle in the shower between 7 and 9 in the morning. The gurgling of the pipes through the night initially was a distraction, but a few days charging round Sydney meant we were all so tired in the end it didn't matter!

More information of the services of the hotel, the TV system and the local surroundings in the welcome pack would have made my job easier initially, as we arrived late in the day with a hungry , tired family, keen to explore, but we managed (as one always does).

The chipped tiles and a hundred layers of white paint on everything tried to hide the age of the place, the suite just needed some TLC. I believe a part renovation is under way, not a moment too soon.

The bar drinks and room service costs were high as you would expect for the captive audience, so we ate and drank out lots. (was a good excuse!)

The buffet style breakfast was nice, great fruit and muesli selection, pastries to die for and English style cooked brekkie was great, the kids loved it, but an additional charge for the barrista coffee was painful, as the included coffee was not good.

The hotel served its purpose, we had a lovely holiday, but I will ask if the suites have been updated before venturing back.

Ten out of ten for the staff, the concierge was helpful, jovial and attentive, the bar staff witty and talkative, the housekeeping courteous and diligent, in truth the hotel was the only dissapointment, good work guys, but Rydges, spend the money, it will be worth it in the end.

Room Tip: ask if they have had their upgrade / refurbishment yet, do not accept tired suites at not tired suit...

I agree with your comment on the bigger rooms, we refurbished the Queen, King & Twin bedrooms last year and now we’re part way through a bit of painting & decorating of Suites. Seven done so far repainted, decorative cushions and new lamps. Granted not a lot but it is making a difference, no more cream the Suites are stone and pale green.

The rooms on the lower floors look over the school next door, it has been there for over 100 years which must be what you thought was “the industrial setting at the back of the Hotel” which is screened by large Port Jackson Fig trees.

I apologies for the recent problems we’ve had with Hot Water colour and pressure, it is very frustrating and annoying, one of those intermittent problems that are very hard to track down. The plumber is called immediately we have an issue and we’re getting closer to a more lasting solution – thanks for your patience.

Appreciate the 10 out of 10 for staff and positive feedback on Breakfast, I hope to see you back again email me if you’re coming and I’ll make it a newer Suite.

We enjoyed our stay, the location is great, close to Sydney, but as we needed to be close to Middle Harbour worked perfectly. Staff kind and obliging. Rooms clean and well maintained. Views from the hotel amazing.

Room Tip: Go for top of the hotel and if possible facing the harbour, if you are not so lucky, views in either...

We had a lunchtime function to attend about 500 metres from Rydges, so that's the reason for choosing this hotel. Definitely worth paying that bit extra for a harbour view room as we had a broad expanse from the edge of Kirribilli over to Bondi and Dover Heights.

Our early check-in request was treated expertly and we were able to come straight from the airport and freshen up in the hour before our event. We walked back from our function and decided on a cocktail and dinner in the hotel's restaurant Mundo. Everything was great, except the Wagyu somewhat disappointing. However feedback was well taken and a discount on this part of the meal given.

The only real gripe is the comparatively poor state of the bathroom with grubby grouting and very tired tiling. The main bedroom area, however, was lovely.

10 out of 10 for the staff we encountered who were all pleasant and professional.

Room Tip: A harbour view room is worth the extra. Try for the top floors, 11 or 12

The view to Fort Denison and the Eastern Harbour is certainly a cracker – hard to get tired of and very distracting.

Thanks very much for the 10 out of 10 for the staff, they all read the tripadvisor so your comments will be passed around and add to their motivation, especially great that they were helpful and gracefully accepted feedback – very important.

I share your concerns on bathrooms and hope to have more to announce in 2013, there are up to date guest photos if anyone reading this is concerned.

We chose to stay at the Rydges because for the price it included more in a package than you got by staying in the city. I contacted the manager before staying as our stay was part of my husbands 50th b'day. He was lovely to reply & address her request.
We stayed in a 2bdrm unit. Included was family passes to Luna Park, parking & breakfast for everyone the next day. You get a discount if you are a Rydges Member. Fabulous!
The lass at check-in was just lovely. I had, had enough of Sydney traffic by check-in and she was calming, friendly & had a smile!.
The unit had been refurbished and was great. Never stayed anywhere where everything was push button on an ipad! My son was in heaven. The unit was on the top floor, lovely. The beds were great, shower perfect & inclusions better than the average. TV in the master bedroom, my husband was happy. A little paint touch up here and there would be good but we loved the unit.
Breakfast was on par with other places but was presented very well with a few surprise breakfast items I hadn't seen before. The breakfast staff were also very nice.
Room service, hmmm a little pricey on what I received received or lacked for my cheese platter & it came up uncovered. Not pleased with that.
Parking was a little squeezy but hey, we got to park the car. We opted to catch a cab to Luna Park which costs about $9.
We chose express check-out (pay for it all the night before) and just deposited the key in the box in the morning & left. Can't fault that.
We will be back.

We have quite a lot of Suites and package them up with Luna Park or Taronga Zoo for families – really great value especially on weekends but you might need to book ahead.

A comfy bed, great view and terrific breakfast - awesome!

The Breakfast was no accident; many hours of meetings and mock set-ups with a lot of help from our corporate office support. Feedback and input was from the M-D right down to the Breaky Chef – it was a collaborative effort and we’re delighted to have positive feedback from real customers.

It’s now been rolled out to other Rydges Hotels; I hope you see similar in our Hotels around Australia and New Zealand.

Thanks again, we hope to see in North Sydney soon.
