We stayed here for 1 night only at the end of a 3 week trip through Australia and New Zealand. I agree with others: great view, good service, but limited room space, limited internet availability, and serious problems with the climate control system. The heater did not work at all, making the temperature in our room at night very cold.
The location is OK; very close to train station, but I still much prefer to stay at a hotel in the city centre, as we did during the early portion of our journey.

You should know that this hotel is very noisy - the train runs underneath from 5 am to 12 pm so there is a short window for a good sleep. It is tired and most importantly for me, this hotel has a $30AUD Adsl internet connection with a 100 megabyte limit per day. I am in the the software business and this is unacceptable - and the download speeds are pathetic.

We came to celebrate and enjoy the city and the view of the Harbour. We did that from the 11th floor when in the Hotel, had a great breakfast and watch the activity on the water. It was just the right place for us - to share in some romance (after 40 years marriage) and we appreciate the way the staff assisted at all times. We could not fault it - in terms of vlaue for money. Used the "relaxation package".

Others have raved about the view, and it really is spectacular - and that's coming from someone who's not rapt with views. I spent some time getting excellent city night photos from the lift lobby in the hotel. Only thing you can't see is the Opera House thanks to the Samsung building being in the way.

However, once you're over the view and it comes to living in your room, things start to deteriorate.

My first impression was an 80's looking card reader system on the door, which didn't always work. Once I got the door open, it hit the doorstop before it was open even 90 degrees. This was due to the entrance way being quite narrow. So not a great start.

Once in the room, it was adequately and attractively furnished - the bed and bedhead in particular were quite nice, although it was a double bed (as was advertised) not a queen which would be normal for a room of this status. I guess the biggest problem is that the space available for each room is pretty small, so they've had to do the best they can with limited space. Therefore, double bed rather than queen. Bathroom has a standing area of about 1m x 1m, plus toilet space and shower/bath, which is OK for one person, but two would be getting a bit cosy. The entrance way would be less than 1m wide due to the hanging space being there, presumably to allow more space in the main part of the room, which is fair enough.

Room was clean and neat and had all the facilities one would expect, but with a few rough edges here and there. The desktop and vanity unit had the look of marble, but in fact were just plastic, though done quite well. The A/C control system looks 70's - 80's; the temperature dial (yes, dial) seems to be in Fahrenheit, though the system still works OK.

There were a few other little issues; staff were quick to do the best they could to rectify but the fact they happened took the shine off a little:

* One of the chairs had a screw which came through the cushion and gave me quite a surprise - was replaced quickly by maintenance
* A night shirt went missing without a trace when the sheets were changed one day - was compensated for

With respect to the A/C system mentioned by another reviewer, apparently their system is a bit old (my comments would agree), and when the system is switched from heating to cooling or back the other way, there's about a week when it doesn't work too well. However when I was there I had no problems at all.

Restaurant menu was very good, staff were friendly.

All in all, I think they do the best they can to provide good service and a good experience but are limited by physical space. Therefore the cost is less than that of other hotels in the area.

If you love a good view and can put up with a few rough edges for the sake of saving yourself a few dollars, you'll have a generally satisfying stay, as did I.

We had the weekend from hell at the Harbour View Hotel. NO MANAGEMENT DECISION . When we first checked in we reported the air conditioning not working. They told us to wait for 2 hours. When we came back to our room that evening it was unbearably hot. We reported the lack of aircon again and were told if we didnt like it to check out - at 11pm there was no where else to go. They told us they would let us know during the week how to compensate our sleepless night. RUINED OUR LONG AWAITED WEEKEND COMPLETELY. WE DROVE HOME THE NEXT DAY......They gave us a 25% discount which was not satisfactory. We recommend you think twice before booking this hotel. NO CUSTOMER SERVICE

We stayed at this hotel last September and had an amazing time. The hotel and our room were lovely and the staff incredibly helpful. We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good although there are plenty of good places nearby which do wonderful food if your budget can't stretch to the hotel prices. One thing I would definitely recommend is that you get a harbour view room. The view was just incredible. Waking up and seeing the harbour bridge right outside your window is amazing. Also at night you can see the whole of the city lit up. I actually just sat there for 30 minutes one night taking it all in! It may cost slightly more but I think it is well worth it. It will be one of the highlights of your trip!!
