“La Maison Seronera: A Beautiful French Farmhouse Rental”
Reviewed 4 weeks ago for a stay in September 2017

I stayed at La Maison Seronera for 2 weeks back in September 2017 along with my husband, 12 month old daughter and in-laws. Having seen lots of lovely photos of this house online, we were really looking forward to our stay.

La Maison Seronera is a large and very charming renovated French farmhouse with 5 bedrooms and is set over 3 floors. The house sleeps up to 11 people and there is certainly plenty of room. The house sits nicely in the middle of a terrace, with the owner’s house to the left and their other rental 'La Tourterie' to the right. The house is quite close to the main road, but we didn't really notice much noise and there is plenty of off-street parking at the property.

Inside La Maison Seronera is what I would call typically French in style. My favourite part of the house was most definitely the beautiful lounge/dining room with its exposed beams and huge fireplace. When we weren’t out and about we spent quite a lot of time in the lounge as our 12 month old daughter had plenty of space to get all of her toys out and play. (This was also the only place the Wi-Fi seemed to work)
The kitchen is also a very lovely part of the house – large, light and airy with a dining table in the middle and all of the usual appliances – fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher etc.

Upstairs offers plenty of space with the bedrooms and bathrooms being very large and tastefully decorated. All of us slept at the front of the house - us in the twin room with the beds pushed together as it was lovely and light and my in-laws in the front double bedroom. We used the rear double bedroom as a place to store our luggage and change our daughter. We had no need to use the 2 large bedrooms on the top floor (even though they are so pretty) but we did use the bathroom up there (this has a shower cubicle)

We tried to spend most of our time in the huge back garden - however this wasn't always possible with the September weather. There is a great patio area with tables and chairs right outside the back door (this is where we ate our BBQ’s) and then a covered gazebo off to the side further down the garden with another table and chairs. The pool is really lovely and sits toward the bottom of the garden behind some shrubs and trees for privacy. I didn't actually go in (it was too cold for me) and only dipped my feet in a couple of times, but my husband and in-laws used it on several occasions. The bottom of the garden backs on to fields – these usually had cows in during our stay. Our daughter particularly enjoyed going to see them in her pushchair as they came up to the fence.

The local area is lovely - Montemboeuf is the nearest place and is just up the main road from the house. There is a Spar located in the centre which is great for picking up the odd bit of shopping, as well as a boulangerie. We actually walked along the main road into Montemboeuf one day to have a look around - it doesn't take long, even with a pushchair.

We were also lucky enough to be staying when the 'Imprevu Festival' was on. The sleepy little town transformed into a loud and colourful music festival with a main stage and wonderful food and drink stalls. It was brilliant and definitely a must-visit if staying in September.

Other nearby places that we visited and are well-worth it for restaurants, shops and general French beauty include - La Rochefoucauld, Confolens, St. Junien & Nanteuil-en-Vallee.
The closest supermarket that we used is located in La Rochefoucauld and is approximately 15 minutes by car.

There are just a couple of things that we noted about our stay and are hopefully helpful feedback for the owners:
1. There weren't quite enough coffee mugs in the kitchen (or that we could find) and being hot drink lovers we had to constantly wash the few up that we had.
2. There didn't appear to be a washing line outside and this made drying the clothes of 5 people quite difficult as we couldn't get everything on the clothes horse.
3. The information folder was a bit out of date. I understand a lot of people probably use the internet these days (us included) but we did find it helpful to peruse the folder for local restaurants etc and we noted a couple of places were permanently closed.

Overall La Maison Seronera is a beautiful French rental property and we are so pleased that we stayed at this lovely farmhouse. The owners, Steve and Isabel were very welcoming on arrival and always spoke to us whenever we passed each other going in and out. The welcome basket of essentials was a lovely touch too. The house was extremely clean and tidy on arrival which was much appreciated.

Recommended.

“Loved our stay - Great house and hosts”
Reviewed September 18, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Perfect large house for a friend's get away. The cottage had spacious rooms and a large garden with a good-sized swimming pool. Izzy and Steve were great hosts, helping whenever we had any issues (popping round with candles during a power outage during a storm) but were not intrusive at any point. They also had a friendly dog called Gus and run a cattery next door.

We had a great time, but cars are a must as the amenities in Montemboeuf (boulangerie + a shop) are pretty limited. There is plenty to do nearby though, though if you have good weather you can easily spend a few days under the parasol or on the deck chairs by the pool.

We were fortunate to arrive in time for the Imprévu festival (music, food, market etc). Other activities nearby I'd recommend are velorail (Gare de Confolens), Piegut market (every Wednesday and then have a coffee at the excellent Le Sens de la Terre) and the amazing but sombre Oradour-sur-Glane massacre (town untouched after being destroyed in WWII).

Liked best: Swimming pool + plenty of tables and deckchairs
Liked least: WiFi access was VERY weak, obviously not the most important thing but would be nice to be stronger.

“Beautiful house and lovely location”
Reviewed September 12, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Great service, beautiful house, would be lovely for a bigger group. Only slight downside was that the pool isn't heated and was so cold we couldn't brave getting in it for the first half of the week. Other than that it was a fab holiday and the hosts were friendly and helpful and very accommodating.

“Three happy generations”
Reviewed June 19, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Mr and Mrs Evans were so welcoming. What a lovely house. They have thought of every detail to make the stay a wonderful experience. The house is home-from-home, spacious and comfortable and still retaining its original character. It was great to get the family round the large dining table or equally to eat outside by the barbeque. The two toddlers played happily on the lawn. The bigger kids also taking full advantage of the lovely pool and garden. The kitchen was very well equipped, loads of pots and plates and bowls, brilliant for catering for many hungry mouths. We would definitely return here.

“Beautiful house in perfect location”

We stayed in La Maison Seronera for a week over the October half term. The house was absolutely perfect for us - 5 adults and 3 children (2-5 years).

The house itself has everything you would need and hope for - large lounge/dining area with a beautiful wood burner, a large family kitchen, 5 spacious bedrooms and 2 bathrooms + 2 toilets. This is complimented by a large garden, with the pool at the end. It's such a lovely, private space and we utilised it fully - games of rounders and lounging by the pool.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather, early 20's everyday! There is so much to do locally, it's a great location to base yourself. The local village, Montemboeuf, has a boulangerie, spar, charcuterie and a little market once a week which you can walk to.

Izzy and Steve are lovely, welcoming and friendly hosts. They are there to help if you have any questions about the house or the local area. I would not hesitate to recommend La Maison Seronera.

“Brilliant property in beautiful location”
Reviewed September 2, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

This was absolutely perfect for our needs, a group of friends with a mix of adults and children.

The house is big enough that there's space to all eat together and relax inside or out as a big group but also to find little corners to read or find quiet alone. The pool was great and the kids absolutely loved it.

The local village is a very short walk and bread and croissants from the boulangerie were delicious. We also used the many leaflets and tips at the house to go on several lovely trips out.

The owners were very helpful and able to resolve any questions we had swiftly and with a smile.
