“no room”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Stayed in one of the recently refurbished rooms which was ok and the bathroom was roomy and clean. The bedroom however was minute. At one point the space between the skirting board and the bed was about 2 inches so if you managed your stay without stubbing your toe (or worse) you have done well. Felt VERY claustrophobic. Stayed at Black Boy for dinner and food very average. Restaurant about to be updated but at present plastic table cloths, false flowers and mismatched paper napkins. Hope for sufficient improvement.

On the plus side the Manger, Sharon, very helpful and breakfast good and plentiful. Okay for a basic stay but if you want a treat avoid.

Just celebrated my Dads 80th birthday with Sunday lunch at Black Boy. A party of 17 of us including 2 toddlers. Great food and Great service. Very tolerant of our sometimes tired and rumbustious youngsters. Would definitely recommend. Thankyou to all involved.

My German girlfriend stayed here for 3 weeks while completing her work experience at a local firm and was over the moon with her stay. So much so that she has been pestering me to write this for a few weeks now lol.

At first she was worried by reviews seen on here and the daunting prospect of a shared bathroom. However, she found the service amazing and really friendly, with the new owners going that bit further than you would expect to make her feel at home in a foreign country.

The bathroom was no problem at all and was kept spotlessly clean, as was her room. The breakfasts were very good and the general atmosphere in the place was fantastic. She ate in the bar a few times over her stay and said this was very nice as well, though as she was on a budget she couldnt do it as much as she would have liked.

The location was excellent, right in the middle of the town. She had no problems with bar noise etc even at the weekends. The only thing that disturbed her one morning was the market setting up but that was only once in the 3 weeks.

Stayed at the Black Boy this weekend and was very impressed with the friendly service, clean rooms, comfortable beds and great food. My mother, sister and I shared a room at the front of the pub, which was exactly what we were looking for. We had an en suite room, although they don't all have that facility. We had plenty of tea, coffee, milk etc and also sufficient clean towels and lovely crisp clean bedding. Beds were very comfortable and the rooms weren't noisy even though we were sleeping above the bar and were right in Sudbury's market square. For the price it is excellent value and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again and would recommend it to anyone.

I paid £35 for a night in this guest house. The room was terrible! Looked like it hadn't been decorated since 1983!
I was hoping for one single bed in the room, but in fact there were three narrow beds . And the bed I slept in was most uncomfortable.
Furthermore, there was chewing gum on the window, which I found disgusting!
I wrote to the manager/proprieter, and gave them the chance to comment, but so far they have remained silent.
It is in a good location (central Sudbury), and the breakfast was good, but this does not weigh out the appalling room!!

I have just returned from a weekend stay at this hotel & i have to say that i was jolly glad to get home. On arrival i could have cried, It ruined my weekend. We were visiting the area for a family wedding. My husband just kept saying it's just somewhere to sleep. I was very disappointed to discover that the rooms we had booked were not en-suite. My fault i suppose i just assumed. I will specify in future & will not be making that mistake again! We did ask to be moved but not possible. The bedroom my husband & i were given was a twin room. [Room 6] It was like a laundry room or a cupboard. Just enough room for 2 single beds. Not even a wardrobe Just a hook to hang up Suits, Clothes etc. You could not swing a cat round. The Bathroom was down the hallway with 5 bedrooms between us. After being told we couldn't be moved i went in search of a pair of flip flops as there was no way i would put my feet on the floor in the bathroom it was horrible. At the very least i would have come away with Athlete's foot. I had to brush my teeth using bottled water as the cold tap did not work but for a few drips. The shower cubicle was filthy. Pink scum in between all the tiles, Nothing that a bit of bleach wouldn't have sorted. My mum was in the family room, Although a slightly better room still not good. The room was above the bins & at several points in the evening they were deafened by the sound of clanging bottles being thrown into the bin. There wasn't even a mirror in the room, Just 3 single beds.
On the positive side the bedding was clean, the staff were polite & the breakfast was hearty. I can honestly say not a good experience & i won't be a returning guest. I cringe at the £274 on my credit card bill.
