Went to try something new in town but was pretty underwhelmed. Sort of place builders take their girlfriends on a Friday night.

We went to Thompson's Bistro this evening. From the taking of our (last minute) booking to us leaving the premises, we couldn't have been looked after better. Everything was just so polite, professional and a little bit special. David, who seems to run the Bistro, was excellent in attending to our every need. From taking our coats, to recommending a good wine, to bringing a fish knife all was perfectly done.

The food was excellent. The lemon sole was perfectly cooked and very fresh and the wine was to a very good standard. The portions were a bit large, but we weren't complaining!

The ambience was very good with some piano jazz playing in the background and a relaxing convivial atmosphere at the bar.

A very pleasant place to spend an enjoyable evening with excellent service and a friendly atmosphere.

One of the best meals ever! This little Gem of a restaurant hidden away in the old town of Sudbury (Gainsborough street) has a vibrant atmosphere and the most welcoming staff. The locals are in drinking and welcome all visitors to the town with a friendly hello and enjoyable conversation at the bar. The food is to die for and the service is second to none. Don't miss out. Book to avoid disappointment!

Read the earlier reviews and (as we had to be in Sudbury) though that we would give it a try.

The earlier reviews (I think) over rate the place but then everything needs context.

Two of us had two courses each and shared a bottle of wine - price wise it was about the same as (say) Pizza Express.
So at that level its great - not the best meal I've had in a restaurat recently, but that cost twice as much - but as good or better than you would expect at a comparable price.
And its a smaller and nicer space than most of comparable eateries in the chain restaurants.
(Don't get me wrong - I like pizza and think Pizza Express is the best of those chains.)

The clincher however was...

Halfway through the meal a screw fell out of my (£3.99) reading(& eating glasses) and the arm came off.
We asked if they had a paper clip we could have but the "front of house" (only waitress) took the glasses to the opticians nextdoor and then went back about ten minutes later to collect them (repaired and cleaned).

My boyfriend and I stumbled across this whilst staying in Sudbury for the weekend. We popped in for one drink on the way to finding somewhere to eat for the evening, but ending up staying the whole evening and eating here.

We have to say that the friendly service was first class; even though the place was very busy we were made to feel welcome and the staff were very attentive to our needs. The food was just fabulous - my boyfriend has been raving on about the fillet steak he eat all week!

The whole atmospshere was so lovely that you felt part of a family. Trish who owns the bistro seemed to know every ones name who came in. It was clear that the staff enjoyed working there too. I loved this place and the fact that they really do serve up the best fillet steaks ever is just anoother reason why we would definitely travel the hour distance to return again soon!
