Bonnievale River Lodge
Reviewed February 23, 2014

My wife and I had booked the Farm House and adjacent West Suite at Bonnievale River Lodge for a weekend catch-up with two old friends. At first, everything seemed fine - very picturesque, adjacent to a large camp-site which, in turn, gives on to the Breede River. But as the weekend wore on, one missed detail after another let the experience down. Dog poop right outside our door - not picked up; rooms not serviced; a dishwasher that didn't work properly; bathroom windows without curtains; the tiniest of wall-mounted TVs in the main room; and finally, no hot water on the second morning. There's building underway and the kitchen door was sealed up with a mixture of grubby towels, bits of old rag and paper, to prevent the dust getting in. Not very alluring. We were also amazed at the fact that by Saturday morning, the campsite was absolutely bursting at the seams - forget any idea of a gentle stroll down to the river - it was a sea of tents. And many, many, many insects - more of the irritating kind, rather than biting - but if you decide to go, take a good repellent.

On the upside, the staff (the few that we saw) were friendly and the camp-site, despite the large number of people present, was quiet.

Not one to revisit, I'm afraid.

Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit. We pride ourselves on offering luxury accommodation in the Farmhouse and adjoining suites at an affordable price and we believe that we have a great track record and many happy visitors over the years.
We are a very popular, pet friendly, riverside camp site which includes self-catering, accommodation. This is evident when visiting our web site and making a booking.
The accommodation is not serviced, servicing is on request as per the handbook in the rooms.
The handbook also contains information re. operating the dishwasher.
Of concern is that most of the problems that you experienced, could have been sorted out in minutes had you raised them immediately. The hot water problem was caused by the geyser tripping after the power failure that was experiencing in Bonnievale on Friday night. This and the other few problems could have been very easily rectified had we been informed.
The bathroom windows to which you refer, provide a view over the vines to the west and end at neck height. We have never considered putting curtains on these windows but will consider it.
Yes, we have builders currently extending the 2nd bedroom and adding a second bathroom to the Farmhouse and this does prove a challenge.
We live on the premises, a very short stroll away from the accommodation and are only too happy to help with any problems that anyone experiences during their stay.

Good campsite. Not too many bugs? Just what is to be expected while camping. Dogs are allowed with prior permission, lots of space for children to play, the sites are lovely river facing with plenty of shade and electrical points. Not too noisy as music is not allowed. I would defintiely go back there again.

once again a fantastic weekend at the river, ablutions were clean, camp sites well looked after. Staff were friendly and with wood delivered to site makes it so laid back. sites are spacious, and the resident dogs are very friendly and well mannered. we used the site as a base to explore the area but could have quite easily stayed at the site and relaxed under the shade of the trees.

We had a lovely stay in The Farmhouse at Bonnievale. The accommodation was immaculate and homely and our hosts were always available to offer advice on the local area. The lodge is well situated to explore Cape Town and the surrounding area, including wine tours and diving with Great White Sharks.Thank you!

Location, location, location plus more!
Arriving to the sounds of Fish Eagles surveying the river on which the lodge is located is a sound that no prepared greeting can match.
Bonnievale River Lodge is a combination of great accommodation on a simply gorgeous setting. Plenty of options for accommodation depending on what you prefer - log cabins, lodge or camping. The service manages to match the location to make this an ideal getaway, holiday or weekend destination.
Re-visit definitely required!

Having just attended a wedding at this resort I find that I have to say something about it. The grounds lends itself to a wedding seting wich offers spectacular views of the Berg River as a backdrop with the majestic mountains in the background. A wedding or function is easily accomodated on the rolling lawns leading to the river front. A reception or funcyion can be easily moved indoors to a comfortable venue where there are sufficient tables available as well as experienced caterers at hand. Did not stay over, but by all accounts of those that did, a well laid out chalet area with a nice rustic feel.
