“Pleasantly Surprised.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

Previous reviews have mentioned the hotel car park (!), let me confirm it is tiny, and difficult to find, (when facing Sainsburys back entrance hotel car park is on the left). Entrance to it is very awkward as you are navigating through Sainsburys delivery area. I can understand why `Spoons` prefer you to use the store car park or the expensive short stay on the market square.
I'd like to confirm that it is used by staff, to the detriment of their customers.
Neverless, receptionist was very polite and helpful. The room ( facing the market square was lovely, one of the best we've been in. En-suite was also a delight, recently refurbished to a high standard.
Security is good with pass keys for enrty to bedroom corridors.
No lift I'm afraid, hard work climbing to the top floors!
Bar is at the back of the hotel, just past reception. I enjoyed the bar as it had atmosphere, it was wonderfully crafted and had lots of interesting pictures and info on the walls. Lounge area at the front (has no bar), looks out onto the square.
WIFI - poor reception. The best place is at the very far end of the bar where the router `sits`. Member of staff reliably informed me that the hotel is re-fitting wifi so that reception is better in all areas including bedrooms.
Ripon is a very historic town, has a beautiful Abbey (a must see), and importantly many pubs and restaurants. Recommend finding the One Eyed Rat (51 Allhallowgate, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 1LQ Tel.01765 607704) if you like a traditional pub, an interesting pub, with real fires and real ales. Locals provide much interest and are welcoming.
Eating - we ate at the Dragon Inn across the road. Meal was delicious, we did have to ask for the heater trays to keep our meal warm but they immediately obliged.
Banks are nearby.
Sainsburys is surprisingly large, very large, and has a downstairs, clothing, very impressed.
Important point, directions to the hotel given by website were accurate and easy to follow.
Would I recommend this hotel, definitely. I gave `sleep quality` as average as the Saturday night revellers were out and about till late in the morning, despite an almighty storm going on throughout the night. The town itself, yes most definitely.

Room Tip: Try to get a lower floor.

Usually stay in a relative's caravan but fancied staying in a hotel this time as it is November! Know the area and shops and a few of the pubs so ate out on the night but room very comfy and moved us when we had booked a twin and were given a double. Room was facing the market square but no noise but it was midweek. Breakfast is good - full large breakfast, eggs benedict and fresh fruit and greek yoghurt with bottomless coffee for £11 which I don't think is bad and poached eggs are lovely. Would go back for another stay as we only paid £48 for two. Tea/coffee tray very good with biscuits and two bottles of water.
Very handy for me to go to the shops and pop back to drop stuff off, have a cuppa ands set off again whilst leaving hubby in the bar!

Excellent stay In a great room . I stay away with work a great deal and have to say for the price ...BRILLIANT.
I recently stayed in Malmaison recently in Glasgow that was £155 per night and not a patch on this room . You will not be disappointed

Great bar, food fab and very reasonable expecially breakfast, just a shame the noise from outside kept us awake all night. Woukdn't have minded at a 19 pound travel inn etc, but 69. Too much for sleepless nights!

Myself and my boyfriend decided we need a quiet night away from the kids, and after trawling the internet came upon The Unicorn. This is a lovely pub, fab food, excellent service and had clean tidy rooms. The only negative was the noise outside the pub in the square, loads of teenagers were congregated here until at least 5am, the presence of the police did nothing to deter them, hence we had no sleep whatso ever! We also requested a double bed and got " singles shoved together, so all in all we had a terrible nights sleep....think twice about going here unless youre prepared to party in the street......

Went here with family last Friday, the pub is spacious and clean and the service fast and attentive but the food was the usual Weatherspoons fayre, mass produced and quite bland, the ‘gourmet’ chicken burger was massive yet tasteless, the cheese was a gloopy sauce and there were hardly any chips on the plate, the sauce came in a cheap paper disposable cup. I suppose it’s the prices that attract though and ‘free’ drinks so to that extent it reaches its target audience and does it well.

Location fantastic, our first time to ripon and could be more lovely little city to visit.
This is a really nice hotel, £69 per night is very acceptable price. Staff at reception were so friendly and warm, with good banter!
Double room was flawless, bed big, bathroom fab, digital telly and coffee/tea etc. Lovely view as well.
Breakfast in the pub downstairs was very very good. Can see why the food gets good reviews.
Pub very busy on a night but others in the area, can't couldn't hear a prep from 3rd floor.
Our radiator in room was a timed one and u could hear the clicking and couldn't get rid which was slightly annoying.
Only other downside is parking. Hotel has a small car park which had no room. Park in the Victoria cross long stay behind bus station.
Overall very impressed!
