Description: The Harpers chain of fish and chip restaurants and takeaways have a well deserved reputation for serving great quality fish and chips Our fish and chips have been a firm favorite with celebrities such as the late, great Richard Whiteley (of 'Countdown' and mayor of Wetwang fame) and the world renowned artist David Hockney. It is an indisputable fact that, once experienced, people across any social divide will travel miles to get a regular fix of our fish and chips! However, although fish and chips are a specialty, it is by no means the only type of food that we include on the menu or that we excel in. There is a mouth watering range of reasonably priced non-fish and vegetarian options as well as a kids menu on offer. Bring family and friends to one of our restaurants or takeaways and see (and taste!) Exactly why we are the best place to enjoy traditional fish and chips in a fun and friendly environment.

“Food is a saving grace!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014 via mobile

Went for an early evening meal on a Saturday night with the family for a special occasion. The decor is nice and the staff seemed friendly enough at first. Unfortunately, a drinks order wasn't taken until we were ready to order our meals which seemed a bit odd as this is a pretty basic formality in this trade. This really set the tone for the evening. The drinks arrived in reasonable time however, the waitress did place them on our table by holding the glass by the rim in which we drink from which surely isn't the most hygienic thing in the world. My mums starter then arrived (mussels) which were very tasty indeed. The main courses arrived in good time and we're very well presented. I had the fish platter which is fantastic value for money, it takes a brave man to finish it! All the fish was cooked to perfection, leaving us all full and very satisfied. I do feel for the chefs who are producing such high quality food as they are been let down by those presenting it. The young waitress was by far the best member of staff. Not sure how the manageress found herself in such a position but that is where the business is going wrong. And also couldn't get my head around the man in the corner polishing cutlery all night long? Felt like I was in an episode of fawlty towers. Will visit again simply for the food. The service needs a lot of work but it is a place with a lot of potential.

“Excellent Food and Excellent Service - The Best!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

Found this restaurant just by chance. Plush, immaculate, high quality furnishings. Keen prices and brilliant staff, the service was excellent from start to finish, very welcoming and professional. Everything was spotless. Quality food cooked to absolute perfection and presented brilliantly. The BEST Fish and Chips we have ever eaten!! Good quality brown bread with butter. Plenty of good hot tea. Well Done to you all we will most certainly be back, very good value too. Home made desserts were to die for. I had the home made Apple Crumble with real custard which was every bit as good as my mother's. Good generous portions. Apparently, there are other branches around the country with one in York. Posh loos. We were served by Pat and Lucy who were lovely and on the ball. Highly recommend this one! We didn't see outdoor seating.

“Day at the races in Ripon, Bob, George,Rody & Wullie from Ayrshire”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2014 via mobile

Visited this restaurant on recommendation from our Alice who lives in this beautiful city, although we had a disappointing day at the races, the visit to Harpers fish & chip restaurant more than made up for our loses. We all had jumbo haddock without a doubt the best we've ever had, staff & surroundings excellent, we will return

“Over priced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2014

Visited here not long after it opened. Service was extremely slow as we waited around 15 minutes after being given the menu, despite only 2 other couples being in. The decor was nice and smelled very new. I doubt it will stay as perfect as that for very long once sauces and grease are splashed about. The staff were polite but slow. Once the food was ordered it took around 15 minutes to receive it. The portions were very generous and the food was good but we felt it was all very over priced, even for a sit down restaurant (it's only fish and chips after all!!) Other items are on the menu, children's portions are available for the smaller appetite and OAP meal deals are also on offer. A dessert menu is also available.
