Owner description: Ripon Cathedral traces its history back to its foundation by St Wilfrid in 672AD. The Anglo-Saxon crypt of St Wilfrid's church remains and is open to visitors. Choral evensong takes place Tuesday to Friday at 6pm and Sundays at 5.30pm. Details of all services may be found on our website. We are open to visitors daily throughout the year and entry is free, though we rely on generous donations to continue this practice. Most of the building is wheelchair accessible with the exception of the Library and the Anglo-Saxon crypt. There is a touch-screen computer interpretation of the crypt at ground level for those unable to access it.

“Beautiful cathedral, you have to visit.”
Reviewed March 8, 2014 via mobile

This is a truly stunning cathedral, so much history to see. There is a tomb underneath the cathedral, which is a must. You cannot go to Ripon without seeing is.

We are glad you enjoyed your visit. The underground tomb you saw has been there since 672AD and known as the Saxon Crypt - one of the oldest sites of continuous Christian worship in the country. Thank you for your review.

“wonderful cathedral”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

a lovely building from outside , when you step inside it takes your breath away, quite different in design and size to other cathedrals, the windows are magnificent, you really need to set aside a couple of hours to truly appreciate and see its splendor especially if taking photos, my photos do not do it justice I am not sure about any of the facilities as we did not allow enough time for our visit but will be going back again

“Magnificent Cathedral”
Reviewed March 3, 2014

We visited without knowing much about the cathedral in advance and what a very pleasant surprise we got. The stained glass windows were breathtaking and don't miss the small sign showing the way to the crypt, down a few narrow winding stairs. We didn't use a tour guide but a couple were on hand to offer friendly and informative advice. And what a pleasant change not to have to pay an entrance fee but leave a contribution if you felt it was worth it which it certainly was!

“A beautiful building”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

The Saxon crypt has been preserved as it was and you can go down and walk around the original structure. The ceiling and windows are magnificent.

A magnificent cathedral which is worth a visit from Harrogate or York.
Fascinating building and more than I expected. Beautiful architecture and make sure you go down into the crypt. Very friendly and helpful guides.
