Owner description: Ripon Cathedral traces its history back to its foundation by St Wilfrid in 672AD. The Anglo-Saxon crypt of St Wilfrid's church remains and is open to visitors. Choral evensong takes place Tuesday to Friday at 6pm and Sundays at 5.30pm. Details of all services may be found on our website. We are open to visitors daily throughout the year and entry is free, though we rely on generous donations to continue this practice. Most of the building is wheelchair accessible with the exception of the Library and the Anglo-Saxon crypt. There is a touch-screen computer interpretation of the crypt at ground level for those unable to access it.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access

Couldn't stay in Ripon and not visit the Cathedral. Had been a couple of days before to York Minster and had the guided tour but thought the £10 entrance was a bit steep. How refreshing then that Ripon was free entry ( though PLEASE make a donation) and came with complimentary guide, though more detailed versions wre available to buy.
Lovely cathedral, windows were spectacular ( better than York? Certainly clearer) and enjoyed the hour or so went going around.
It would be good if they offered an optional guided tour though.

Very nice cathedral, art exhibition going on at the time, so even more to look at, had an interesting chat with one of the "officers" of the church, explaining aspect of the building, nice to see they have incorporated modern elements to the building without spoiling the look of it.

As Ripon Cathedral is small you can take everything in. There was an Art Exhibition there at the time which although good we would have preferred to see the church walls and plaques. We enjoyed the quirky things as well. (You must visit to find out what they are!)

We were lucky enough to visit on a day the Orchestra was practising for a concert, it was amazing.
Look for the cheeky carvings hidden around.

An impressive building, the interior has stunning windows and ancient artefacts, however the removal of the pews & the modern art displays on view ( placed over more artefacts ) has detracted from the reverential feeling the place had in years gone by.
