Owner description: Ripon Cathedral traces its history back to its foundation by St Wilfrid in 672AD. The Anglo-Saxon crypt of St Wilfrid's church remains and is open to visitors. Choral evensong takes place Tuesday to Friday at 6pm and Sundays at 5.30pm. Details of all services may be found on our website. We are open to visitors daily throughout the year and entry is free, though we rely on generous donations to continue this practice. Most of the building is wheelchair accessible with the exception of the Library and the Anglo-Saxon crypt. There is a touch-screen computer interpretation of the crypt at ground level for those unable to access it.

A small cathedral compared to others but non- the- less any more beautiful or reverent. The choir was practicing for the next service and it was a perfect sound as the accustics were wonderful.Well worth a visit if in North Yorkshire

“Saints and Sinners tour”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

I joined this 'Saints and Sinners' tour which was organised by Lighthouse Tai Chi from Burnley. Over 40 Tai chi enthusiasts took were on the trip, which was the brainchild of Helena Kean the Tai Chi Tutor.
The 'Saints' part was a visit to the beautiful Cathedral and Town of Ripon in North Yorkshire.
The cathedral itself is breathtaking and everywhere your eye is drawn to something new. The pulpit is an Art Nouveau masterpiece which strangely sits so well in a gothic structure. But the highlight for me are the wood carvings that are under the seats in the choir section of the nave. They depict scenes from everyday life all those centuries ago, including one that is supposed to have inspired the story of Alice in Wonderland. Lewis Caroll (real name Charles Dodgson) lived in the town as his father was a clergyman in the cathedral and under one of the miericords( drop down seats) is a wood carving of a rabbit struggling with a griffin , with a depiction of the rear end of another rabbit disappearing down a rabbit hole. I will put up a photograph soon of this. The town of Ripon is filled with museums and places to visit as it used to be a spa town . The old Spa Baths are now the towns swimming pool in a lovely park. Even in early feb the weather was sunny and the town looked its best.

Next came the 'Sinners' part of the tour to the Black Sheep Brewery at Masham where we got a tour of the brewery and a couple of half pint samples of the different brews of beer they produce. The brewery tour was rather too long at 1.5 hours with a lot of standing about, but I left and went into the charming village where there was a market, lots oif little shops and and impressive parish church of St Mary the Virgin with some Elizabethan 17th century tombs with effigies.I got back in time for the free tasting and very nice it was too.

I can recommend Ripon for a great day out with lots to see and do. We had a nice lunch at the Warehouse Cafe in a little back alley with a view of the Cathedral, and with lovely home cooked food and a great choice of cakes.

I visited Ripon Cathedral last August, it is fascinating to see so much history in one building (in America our oldest standing churches are only about two centuries old). The decorated coffins of the knights were unexpected, and fascinating. I am amazed a building with such history is still in service, every week as originally intended.
