Owner description: Ripon Cathedral traces its history back to its foundation by St Wilfrid in 672AD. The Anglo-Saxon crypt of St Wilfrid's church remains and is open to visitors. Choral evensong takes place Tuesday to Friday at 6pm and Sundays at 5.30pm. Details of all services may be found on our website. We are open to visitors daily throughout the year and entry is free, though we rely on generous donations to continue this practice. Most of the building is wheelchair accessible with the exception of the Library and the Anglo-Saxon crypt. There is a touch-screen computer interpretation of the crypt at ground level for those unable to access it.

The Cathedral is highly visible in Ripon - as you would expect and the entrance is right in the middle near the shops but it extends to the river too. Worth a walk right round the outside for the many views. I was passed a leaflet when I entered the building which gave details on the things to look for and a brief history. The Quoir Stalls have wood carvings and the last seat has a hare that inspired Lewis Carrol to write Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. There is a library upstairs but there is a fee for this £1. The cript is open to the public too and worth a visit. Impressive building and notice the new glass doors.

Always a warm welcome for visitors. Great to see the Christmas decorations and beautiful Nativity Scene. The Crypt is quite a special holy place. We love our annual visit to Ripon Cathedral.

As cathedrals it is one of the oldest sites of continuous Christian worship in Britain. The church was founded over 1300 years ago by St Wilfrid. It is as busy as ever and has concerts going on throughout the year. Visit www.riponcathedral.org.uk for more info.

“Stunning Old Cathedral in a sweet little old city”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

This cathedral is huge and lovely and old, but with recent touches like new amazing doors and a few new bells added that make it a wonderful place to visit and to stay to hear the bells. The cushions were made by very talented locals, and they depict the history of Ripon and the local sights. The cathedral has art and a special displays of historical interest when I last visited, and a lovely old crypt. It is a very old cathedral - 1100 years old or more. And, it has a unique connection to the stunning Fountains Abbey, which is not far. I highly recommend visiting!

To put it simply the is a fantastic building to explore, just be aware those with mobility problems will struggle with access to the Saxon Crypt.
