We only stayed for 2 nights but would definitely love to visit again when we are next in the area. The staff were all so lovely, very attentive to our every need, personal but without being intrusive. The accommodation was quite luxurious and the view from our room of the cathedral was wonderful.

Thank you, Geraldine, and I am glad bedrooms facing the Cathedral are being praised so much recently... I think its lovely to hear the chimes of the clock as you wake up and the bell ringing practice is Wednesday 7pm to 9pm so thats a bonus! We hope to welcome you again. Linda W

No crude makeover here to suit the jaded palate of business executives : The Deanery greets you with cool pale shades of olive and beige in keeping with the elegance, the ornate cornices and the pleasantly out-of-kilter floors of the eighteenth-century building. Our room was large, airy and comfortable without the overkill that is sometimes deemed an integral part of luxury. The furnishings of natural wood harmonised with the period shutters, and the four-poster bed made for a relaxed and comfortable night. We’d picked up misgivings about the close proximity of the cathedral across the street and the alleged vigour of the campanologists who were due to practise there on the night we spent at the hotel. But the ringing was remarkably muted, in fact; and as we settled down to sleep the soft chimes from the clock-tower proved to be a gentle accompaniment that helped us drop off for what was a peaceful night.

I can’t remember having ever been made to feel so much at home as we were in The Deanery. From the initial greeting through to chat in the bar, the delicious meal in the restaurant and breakfast the following morning, we felt we were in the hands of people who enjoyed meeting customers and took pleasure in catering to their needs. The meal was wonderful – prepared, cooked and presented with art, and providing tastes and textures to delight the palate. The ambience throughout was perfect, even if the break in the weather meant our morning stroll in the beautiful garden was briefer and a bit damper than we would have wished. We shall be back.

This is what we want to achieve - if we could only do it every time, I'd be a happy hotelier! Its easy when guests were made for the Old Deanery..... as you say, the welcome is extended by everybody here and long may it continue. I think you might write for a living - thanks for writing about us so beautifully. Linda W

We stayed here Aug 14 and were delighted when we discovered its perfect location in Ripon, directly across from the Cathedral in the heart of the "city" (though picturesque Ripon is tiny, it is designated a "city" because of the presence of the cathedral, whereas nearby Harrogate is 20 times bigger but is designated a "town" by the lack of such - interesting). The house itself was built in the 18th century and is a treasure with its wonderfully-patinated stone block construction, huge curved stairway, and large rooms, but it has not been redecorated in a decade or more and has few significant modernities. However, ageing Grade II UK properties are supposed to look, well, aged. So I don't have much of a complaint there and we enjoyed our one night there.

Our room was large, with a four-poster brass bed, a large set of sash-type windows, 10' ceiling, nice view of the entire back yard area, and a nice bath with modern four-leg tub that was very hard to use as a shower even though there was a curtain that encircles it. I would have preferred a larger bed, as we're used to sleeping in a king, plus a more functional shower, but those are not really complaints.

The back yard has one of the most beautiful weeping willows you'll see, and the stone-fenced property sits right next to the historic city council building with its beautifully-landscaped grounds. 200 steps away, if you take the shortcut, you're in the market square where every night at 9PM sharp, for a continuous 1120 years now, a night watchman blows a shofar four times to announce that "all is well" then he goes to the mayor's house to proclaim that in his front yard. This is an event you can't miss, and the night watchman is humorous and engaging.

We were counting on dinner in the hotel, as the chef is supposed to be very good. However, he found it necessary to be away the night we were there and we ate at a new place just down the street - La Brasserie, which is the worst meal either of us can remember eating in years. So, you should stay at The Old Deanery, see the town and the night watchman show, but don't eat at La Brasserie.

Wow thanks for that! The photos are lovely and I am sorry that we could not welcome you to the dining room that night. You appreciated everything that makes us and Ripon such an unusual and interesting place to visit. We are so close to the town and yet in a secluded position and we hope to welcome many more of your countrymen in future and try to feed them ourselves, in future. I have repainted during the last few years-honest! Its like the Forth bridge and never finished.

I stay and attended a friends wedding here. It is a beautiful little place opposite the gorgeous cathedral.

The service and food was great and they have some lovely gardens out the back.

The beds were comfy and the rooms large and spotless.

Breakfast was lovely, black pudding and good quality sausages.

Would stay here again.

We stayed for one night at the Old Deanery in late August, attracted by its location next to Ripon Cathedral and by its restaurant revues. There was plenty of room to park in a secluded area behind high walls at the front of the hotel. We were initially delighted with our room - large, high ceilinged, clean, and well equipped, with a view of the garden. It was also surprisingly quiet - hardly any sound from the cathedral bells. Unfortunately, we were hugely disappointed with our evening meal. Service was very slow and one main course had to be sent back and another different choice substituted. On returning to our room afterwards, the lighting was so dim that we couldn't even read a book in bed! To be fair, when we complained to the owner on booking out next morning, she took our comments with good grace and gave us a substantial reduction on our bill. We were also happy with the attentiveness and helpful attitude of the hotel staff. To sum up - in our opinion it was like the proverbial Vicar's egg - good in parts.

I dread to think what the review would have been like if there had not been a substantial reduction, which I should like to confirm was for the food you did not like and not for the light levels in the room, which have been worse since the introduction of low energy bulbs. I am saving up to buy new reading style lamps throughout the hotel....

Beautiful hotel, situated right by the cathedral with lovely, weeping willowed private garden where we enjoyed tea in the sunshine. Very nice spacious and well equipped rooms with comfortable beds. My sisters and I shared a triple room in the eaves which was more than adequate and even the single camp style bed was comfortable. The bathroom was large and the shower powerful, unusually for an attic. Free WiFi was also available and the room had its own box so reception was excellent. We had one evening meal in the restaurant which was excellent. Staff are very friendly and accommodating. The cathedral clock is very audible but we found comforting rather than disturbing, although we were not there on a Sunday morning or during bell practice!

The hotel is within very easy walking distance for the city square (even for my 90 year old father) where there are shops and a range of restaurants and cafes.
Ripon is a very beautiful city but is also a wonderful location for exploring the region. We spent a lovely day at Ripley Castle, 15 mins drive away which has beautiful gardens and walks and a very nice cafe for lunch and tea. Also has lots of seats to punctuate the walks!

Would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had room 9 in the eaves which was more than adequate for a triple room. My father had room 4 whic...

The bell ringing practice - and they are good, I might add- is on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9pm so not usually anything other than entertainment! I am glad the room did its job for you as a family room and that Ripon certainly didnt disappoint. Come again!! You must have missed something...

We had a wonderful wedding at The Deanery. All the food, venue, drinks, table layout, location, garden area, balcony for speeches, evening area with 120 guests was perfect. We had lots of good comments from our families and evening guests. We stayed 2 nights and our room was spacious and cool on a warm weekend. All meals were excellent with a good choice. The bar staff went the extra mile for our guests. Thank you for a lovely experience.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the garden are quieter.
