Staff could not have been more polite and helpful but we found the hotel a little on the shabby side. Waiting for breakfast in the dining room the lovely outlook to the garden was spoiled by the chairs and empty glasses of the night before not having been cleared. Breakfast was lovely when served but we had to sit in the dining room for almost an hour before our cooked breakfast came. I would suggest that on that particular weekend in April the hotel was understaffed. This hotel was sold to us a "boutique" hotel. I hesitate to be too critical because the staff could not be faulted however I do not consider this to be a boutique hotel. All the basics are there - beautiful setting, beautiful building but investment required and a more careful choice of furniture. Eclectic can be great but interior design was too random.

Once again, a review that I find hard to answer spoils my response times. I am so sorry that your experience was marred by a long delay at breakfast and an air of neglect...in fact I believe you are the victim of a bad couple of days caused by a staff shortage and a chef who failed to get up in the morning...I am trying to think where we advertise ourselves as a boutique hotel? It is hard to pin point what we are with any accuracy but I was most pleased with what you said about my staff. They are the heart and soul of my small, but not in any sense boutique, hotel.

We stayed one night here in early April - thanks to tripadvisor !!
Amazing place
Quirky
VERY OLD
had been bought about 10 years ago and has been " restored ", converted to a hotel by a far sighted business woman .
Our room was awesome ! four poster , floor with severe slope from the undoubted subsidence separate large bathroom whose floor had a slope to challenge ramblers !

Remarkably good meal with interesting menu and excellent cheeseboard .
Friendly helpful staff one and all .
Looks onto the cathedral - literally across the road so absolutely central .
Dont go here if you want run of the mill same /same accomodation , this is unusual and a joy. If we are back in Ripon , we will stay again and certainly eat here !!

Room Tip: Room 5 was our room and wonderful overlooks the side of the cathedral

Having just stayed here on the weekend of 13/14th April for a wedding celebration, I can only say that everything was brilliant. The Hotel and wedding ambience is all that you would expect, the wedding meal was excellent, well prepared and presented and very filling, as was the evening buffet provided later in the evening. The service provided by all the staff again was excellent, they worked their socks off to ensure all guests enjoyed themselves. Special thanks to Linda and her colleagues for making it a weekend to remember.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms require a lot of steps to walk up, so not the best if you have walking difficult...

Thanks so much for your excellent review and we are glad you had a good time. Each wedding is different, so many new ideas, but there is that one constant - we all work our socks off every time!! You must come again and stay on the first floor!

We had our wedding at The Old Deanery on the 6th of April and we had a fantastic, amazing day. Linda, Emma and the team were excellent from the day we first visited the venue to look around and helped us plan the most special day of our lives so far. The building, the rooms, the food, the wine, the band, (Frankly Jazz) were all out of this world. But most of all the staff were absolutely brilliant. Special thanks to Linda and Emma for the accommodating attitude to our requests for personalising the venue, nothing was too much trouble, and also to Ben and Mark for being such great hosts on the day. If you are looking for the No1 wedding venue in North Yorkshire - look no further. A massive thanks, Gary & Ruth Jones

My wife and I have just had our wedding at the Old Deanery and it was PERFECT!

None of our guests actually knew where we were getting married (it was a magical mystery tour) and when the bus pulled up outside the Old Deanery they couldn't have wished for a prettier and more special place. The Deanery was the perfect size for our 50ish guests and the staff made us all feel relaxed and welcome. Food was great, the canapes got lots of compliments and there wasn't a roastie or slice of beef left in sight after our main meal!

Linda, Emma and Brett were brilliant on the day and during the build up to our wedding, where they were so accommodating, flexible and full of good ideas! Nothing was too much trouble.

If you are considering having your wedding at the Deanery all we can say is, GO FOR IT!

Can't wait to go back for our first anniversary!

Thanks again, James & Rosie x

Having read previous reviews of the Old Deanery we had high expectations and were not disappointed. The welcome was very warm and staff could not do enough to make us feel welcome and make sure we were happy. The room was full of character, nicely appointed and very spacious. The bar area was warm and cosy. Unfortunately due to the weather we were the only diners in the restaurant but the meal did not disappoint, with a local theme to most of the dishes, and the food and wine were both excellent. Service in the bar afterwards was also excellent, with staff happy to offer tasters to ensure the right choice of night cap was made!
The inclusive breakfast the next morning was very good. Would recommend a stay here!

Well, the best time to cosy up to the fire is when the weather is awful outside, so we have had a lot of that recently! It sounds as though we came up with the perfect night cap! Thank you.

We stayed here to see whether or not it would be suitable for our civil partnership venue. We were looking for a small top quality, but not pretentious hotel, with excellent food, wine and friendly service. We were not disappointed at all and have now booked this for our partnership.

We stayed in room 4 which is very spacious with an extremely comfortable bed. There are nice touches such as Molton Brown toiletries. It wasn't noisy at all which helped with the sleep quality.

We had dinner which lived up to our expectations. Try the pigs cheek for a melt in the mouth quality meat. The service was excellent and just right in terms of timings. There is a lovely bar area with a real fire which is great for relaxing before or after dinner.

Linda the owner is very attentive and keen to ensure that standards are kept high. In fact all the staff are friendly and helpful.

Highly recommended for a stay in a historical building that overlooks the cathedral and is directly in the city centre.
