“Already booked for the New Year”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

We stayed at The Deanery to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. The service at the hotel is second to none; the staff were very polite and only too happy to assist. We arrived very early and our room wasn’t ready however; the young man on reception called housekeeping and asked them if they would prepare our room next. We also forgot to book a table in the restaurant for Sunday lunch (fully booked) once again with lots of effort from the staff they fitted us in. The food was excellent
The room was very clean, well presented and the bed was comfy. The en-suite had a beautiful slipper bath complete with a rain shower. This room (no.4) overlooked the beautiful garden and when the window is open you can hear the Cathedral bells.
The building its self is very old and has a lot of character, inside and out, and can understand why they host a lot of weddings. The Old Deanery is ‘one of a kind’ as is the owner Linda. We planned a day at the races and she tried to obtain 2for1 tickets.
We were looking for a relaxing weekend in a beautiful hotel with excellent food and good wine and that’s exactly what we got. Before leaving we booked a 2 nigh stay for New Years Eve and New Years day but this time in room 5 overlooking the Cathedral.

I am not sure if "one of a kind" is good but I am translating it to "unique!" and I guess we all are here... its a pleasure to entertain guests when they really connect with the place so roll on New Year's Eve, I say!

Stopped off for afternoon tea after visiting the Cathedral and was very impressed. The staff were very friendly and the service good.My friend had visited for lunch on a previous occasion and been very impressed. The building looks beautiful and it would be worth visiting Ripon again just to stay here .

We are so glad you enjoyed our afternoon tea because its a fairly new service for us and we love our shabby chic bone china and slightly quirky style. Many people don't even realise they can come in and just have a cup of tea so thanks for the praise. It gives us all a boost!

Visited the Old Deanery on Monday night for a meal with my husband and it was fantastic. The staff were very welcoming and the service very good. I had the duck, followed by the venison and then the cheese board, my husband had the salmon, followed by the coley and he finished off with the bakewell tart. You've never seen such clean plates being sent back. The food was very tasty and well presented. We would definately return when next in the area

Sorry this is one of a couple of reviews I thought I had responded to and I apologise...we are really pleased that you wholeheartedly approved of our restaurant and we would obviously love to welcome you again. We do have a new chef but the food is just as tasty.

We stayed here after racing at Ripon- what a charming place where nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is an old building so expected rooms not to be up uniform or predictable- added to the charm. The room was also up to date with a good shower room and comfortable bed.
We were lucky with this year's weather and spent a delightful hour with a drink in the peaceful garden.
Dinner was fantastic- beautifully presented and imaginative food- service was a little rustic but friendly!
Breakfast equally good and the whole experience well worth it!

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper- ask for a room away from the cathedral- the clock strikes the hour!

Thats what we like to hear and we are pleased you enjoyed our nearness to the races and our food and drink experience... but our front of house staff would love to know what "rustic" means in relation to their service!! Whatever it is I am glad it did not detract from your experience..

The staff and restaurant were wonderful! They even went out and bought a hot water bottle for me. My husband and could relax and unwind while the staff did everything they could to make us feel welcomed. We just loved our stay and will return soon!

Room Tip: If church bells would bother you, than do not book here. Of course it is next to the cathedral that...

We aim to please and I am delighted with your remarksbut I must stress that the bells cannot be heard from the rear rooms and even those that face the Cathedral are fine in the winter with the windows closed; or with the windows open our ear plugs are useful!!! free from reception. Many people embrace the sound of the clock chiming as a part of our charm. I hope it will not put people off as our food and a glass or two of wine can make most people slumber through till breakfast!

Our stay 13 August 2012

The Old Deanery dates from the early seventeenth century, although most of the public areas look Georgian and boasts of being voted the best restaurant in Ripon and possibly North Yorkshire. The first flaw was when we discovered that the reservation print out did not contain the address or phone number of the hotel and we had to search the internet for the information.

The principal reason we chose the Old Deanery was the appeal of the hotel website and what appeared to be a fine dining restaurant. Upon our arrival the receptionist informed us that the restaurant would be serving a “relaxed” menu. The “relaxed” menu on our particular Monday evening turned out to be bar snacks. Disappointingly, the website did not make any reference to a “relaxed” menu.

The first room we were offered needed the attention of a locksmith and we were relocated into another equally large room with a very small LCD TV and bespoke furniture. The room was romantic or dull depending on ones point of view. The lobby and bar areas looked recently refurbished while the breakfast and our room looked tired.

I enquired about internet access and was handed a crumpled blue Ethernet cable. However, when I inserted the cable into the room socket I discovered that the internet socket had became detached from the rest of the wall box. I was told that wireless access was available on the ground floor and in room one, the room with the deficient lock.

It is irksome not having wireless access and leaves one with the impression that the owners have either not yet arrived in the twenty first century or are not connected with the needs and requirements of guests.

Breakfast was fine served by the receptionist who had been on duty at the time of our arrival until 11pm and was again serving breakfast at 7.30 the next morning. Full marks for him who spent his time between pillarand post.

The only minus point was that he did not enquire if we had a pleasant stay and we noted that payment by Amex would have resulted in a 2% surcharge. Credit card surcharges are a nickel and dime charge applied by companies that care little for their customers but seek to extort every last penny.

Would we stay again? Probably not although the menu still looks great. It seems to be a thing in Ripon that very few restaurants bother to open on a Monday evening. Full marks to the Royal Oak Public House.

Room Tip: If you are impressed by the menu enquire if the chef will be in on the night of your stay

Well, I apologise sincerely for the fact that we did not give you an enjoyable experience. I have been trying to find a way to alert people about the Monday and Tuesday relaxed dining. It states on the top of the dinner menu on the web site that dinner is served on Wednesday to Saturday 7pm to 9.30pm. I have spent a lot of time trying to ensure that all bookings for bed and breakfast for Mondays and Tuesdays get an email or telephone call to inform them of the relaxed menu even though, like you, they had not mentioned wanting to dine. You slipped through that net. I am sorry.

I feel I should stick up for restaurants in Ripon who "cannot be bothered to open" on a Monday! I believe it to be the case in most small towns across the country. It is a business decision that most of the independent operators have had to tackle. We do open with a very good but different offering. I take note of your other remarks and shall act on them as necessary. Thank you, Linda

We wanted somewhere perfect to stay for our wedding anniversary and in the Old Deanery, that's exactly what we got. The hotel is a beautiful old building full of charm and character, the front of the hotel overlooks the cathedral and at the back there is a beautiful garden. We stopped in the four poster room overlooking the garden, the room was enormous and beautifully decorated and had everything you could possibly need. The bathroom was also very stylish and had a beautiful view. All the staff were fantastic, very attentive and always happy to help. Our evening meal was absolutely gorgeous, my husband had the duck and the lamb and I had the red onion soup and the sea trout, the presentation of both meals was wonderful and the taste - truly scrumptious!!!! This is one of the best hotel's we have ever stayed in and we can't wait to to go back.

Room Tip: If you want something extra special, choose the four poster room overlooking the garden.
