OK, back on the UK roads again, this time for Mrs G's birthday. We booked a night at Swinton Park on recommendation from Mrs G's niece who stayed there in October. Arrived at 2pm to find that the hotel was suffering intermittent power cuts as the power company was trying to restore the system since the recent gales. However, it was daylight so we were able to check into the room. All very good up to this point and the room was high in the building and large and spacious with a cricket theme (which probably explains the green wallpaper). We could only have a sandwich because of the power cuts, and to be honest it wasn't the finest we've eaten, but we'll make allowances because of the situation. The house white wine was delicious, from Galicia in northern Spain and good value at £5 a decent glass.
The lights were due back on at 3pm ish, but didn't come on until 5.30, by which time the place was festooned with candles which created a real winter atmosphere. Out jovial 'wartime spirit' mood was doubtless helped by the free glass of champagne that the general manager forced upon us.
Now for dinner - we chose the seven course tasting menu, and we were not disappointed. The introductory glass of champagne and canapes were perfect which provided an excellent curtain raiser for what was to follow. Lovely table in the window, fine glasses and napery and the service was first class, every dish explained and the accompanying wines provided a real sense of fine dining. Big roaring fire, exquisite food - what's not to like. It's not a cheap night away, but it's ideal for a special occasion. Mrs G gave it a big 'yes' vote, so that's fine by me.
