Came to Ripon for a one night stay after Xmas
. With the intention of seeing the hornblower.
He arrives in the square just before 9pm.
He stands by the obelisk in the market place and blows the horn at each corner ie n.s.east and west corners. It says that all is well in the town. Quire interdting if you are there but not really worth a 200 mile journey.!

Every night at 9pm the Hornblower performs his/her duty in the town square. Following this they give you a history of this ceremony which has been performed every night since the year 886. Well worth going along.

Older than the Changing of the Guard or the Edinburgh Castle canon, this ceremony has been performed, WITHOUT FAIL, at 9pm every night since 886.On a dreary September evening, about twenty people gathered to watch this simple historic ceremony. The city has four people honoured to perform this role and tonight it was Wayne. After the ceremony, he gave an entertaining and engaging brief description of the tradition’s historic and civic importance. It only takes 15 minutes- we are so glad we made the effort.

We met with the Hornblower at 9 O'clock promptly. His talk was informative and he did a good job of engaging with his audience. He was very knowledgeable about the role and he was obviously very proud of his position.
