Owner description: Markenfield Hall – tucked privately away along a mile-long winding drive, just three miles south of Ripon, has been described as Yorkshire’s best-kept secret. Not visible from the road, a glimpse of the imposing east wall cannot be seen until visitors reach the old Mediaeval road near to the top of the drive. But for a quirk of fate – and the turnpike act of 1777 – Markenfield would be one of the most recognisable houses in Yorkshire and the nearby A61 would run along this now-Bridleway just 100m from its façade. As it is, the house is approached from the A61 Ripon to Harrogate Road along a humble farm track, past agricultural buildings and farm workers cottages. Parking at the side of the moat, visitors approach the building on foot – walking over the bridge that now serves the house in place of the former drawbridge – and the moment the Mediaeval Courtyard opens up as visitors pass beneath the Tudor Gatehouse never fails to astound. Open to the public for just 28 days each year - or to groups by appointment at virtually any other time - the Hall is still privately owned and in the hands of dedicated custodians.

“Beautiful and fascinating medieval house”
Reviewed July 4, 2011

Several months ago I saw this lovely medieval moated property on the TV show ‘A Place in the Country’ . I looked at the website but though it unlikely I would visit having no plans to visit Yorkshire at that time.
Last week I did find myself in Harrogate but had forgotten about Markenfield until a picture flashed up on the local TV weather programme.
I then checked the website and was delighted to notice it was open so off we went. We were not disappointed, it is such a beautiful property with a fascinating history. I would urge anyone visiting Yorkshire to visit however the only problem is the limited opening times, a few weeks in May and a few in June.
I was lucky to see this little slice of history but it’s a shame it doesn’t open more often.

“A gem of a house, worth every penny to visit.”
Reviewed May 26, 2011

Last week a coach party of nearly fifty people visited Markenfield Hall, a fortified country house near the Yorkshire city of Ripon. We were greeted warmly by our hosts and split into 2 groups by the 2 guides who were to take the groups around the house. Both guides were very knowledgeble and gave us all sorts of details about the history of the house, the family and the surroundings. The two black swans which swim in the moat surrounding the house always come by to greet any visitors and a large cat and a labrador dog usually have look at any visitors. The tour of the house lasts about 90 minutes but chairs which you are allowed to sit on are available throughout the whole house. Everyone in our groups enjoyed the visit to Markenfield Hall which can be visited at any time during the year by prior arrangement but if individuals are visiting it is only open for a short time in May and June. Check on the Markenfield Hall website for the opening days and ring the hall if you are visiting as a group. Please try to find time to visit this gem of a house which is off the A61 between Ripon and Harrogate.
