I always enjoy a visit to Fountains Abbey. To wander in the grounds gives one a sense of peace and although there are always lots of cars in the car park sometimes it seems as if you are the only person there.
What an improvement in the visitors' centre restaurant. I am always a little dubious about buying anything which is open to the elements and peoples' coughs and sneezes. On a visit recently I was so pleased to see that nearly everything is now under cover and the open space as you walk in is now used to its full advantage with delicious cakes and biscuits on display and easy to select.

Visited Fountains Abbey as part of a day trip from Harrogate also taking in Ripon and its Cathedral. Very tranquil location and beautiful abbey ruins which have been in a number of period dramas. Then a pleasant walk to the Studley Royal Water Garden.
You could easily spend an hour or two walking round, and some people even had picnic beside the abbey. The further from the abbey, the quieter it is.
Well worth seeing.

This is one of my favourite places in the world. We have been on numerous occasions and no matter what the weather the scenic beauty and sheer tranquillity of the Abbey never disappoints. A great place to walk, pathways are exceptionally well maintained so you never get muddy. And what's more, the two well placed restaurants mean that you can always stop off fir a well earned coffee break!

We were only vaguely aware of Fountains Abbey before our visit as we travelled north to Scotland – what a find! The scale of the place is immense and there is a real sense of history.
There is a lot of walking to get around the whole site (300+ hectares) but there are good paths everywhere.
Toilets are a little spaced out and it is a hike from the Mill Cafe to the nearest loo.
There is a large National Trust centre and restaurant at the main entrance.
We were only able to spend a couple of hours there but will certainly be back; even on a grey and damp Yorkshire day the place the place exuded tranquillity.
Free to National Trust members (what do you mean, you’re not a member! – shame on you :-))
