Superb UNESCO location - lovely walks and time to chill. A great day out for all the family. Even on a cold day its beautiful. Best to park at the lower car park to avoid the steep hill if you have pushchairs etc.

A great way to spend the day. The grounds of Fountains Abbey are simply stunning and a pleasure to walk through, The Abbey itself is very interesting and wonderful for children of all ages......right up to 63 in my case! The only restrictions on where you can go in the surprisingly well preserved Abbey are dictated by sensible H&S limitations.
For those who enjoy a walk I suggest parking by the lake at the Studley Royal end of Fountains Abbey(take the road to Studley Roger; through the arch at the entrance of the deer park and keep your eyes open for the deer. If you’re lucky you may see them feeding). Enter the Fountains Abbey grounds and take the ‘high road’ to the main Visitors’ Centre. The map you will be provided with on entry will show the various routes you can take. Have a cup of coffee and a bite at the excellent restaurant by the Visitors’ Centre and return along the lower path, stopping off to explore the Abbey. If you have children and fancy a picnic, park at the well maintained Fountain’s Abbey parking area and amble down to the Abbey; spread your blanket on the ground; eat, drink and have fun.

We visit Fountains Abbey several times a year.
Park at the Deer Pk (NT members free). Here you have a stunning view of the lake and weir. We do the seven bridges walk first. It is a circular walk that either starts or if you like finishes on the straight drive you have just driven up. On your return to the car you can enter the Abbey grounds, this is the opposite end to the abbey. If its your first visit ask the staff for information on the various walks in the grounds. There are two gift shops, one at each entrance and somewhere to get one of the truly excellent Brymore Icecreams. (An award winning ice cream made at a farm a little further up the dale) There is a further tea room adjacent to the magnificent Abbey.
The site is open all year round

My partner and I visited here during a trip to Yorkshire to celebrate her birthday. The entire trip lasted 4 days and we enjoyed every day but I think our visit to Fountains Abbey and the adjacent walks was the high point. It's simply wonderful. To be fair we did have just about perfect late autumn weather! Will will most certainly be returning.
