This is a lovely, welcoming little hotel. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and were very helpful with regards to their parking issue. There wasn't much parking on site, but it's conveniently in the middle of a little market town... NOWHERE has much in the way of parking! ...It didn't take us long to find somewhere..

We stayed two nights in their superior suite, which whilst fairly small, was very comfortable and well equipped..(and typical of somewhere with that kind of history and character). There were plenty supplies (coffee and tea etc) the bedding and towels very clean. The decor was fresh and contemporary (recently decorated) and the bed was more comfortable than my own. The night was quiet, even when the hotel was fully booked.

On the second night we ordered steak, watercress and chips and thoroughly enjoyed it. Beautiful! Our first breakfast was very nice (beautiful quality sausages and bacon) but the second breakfast was even better (mushrooms browned in butter! yum!).

We'd definitely go back. My only (very small) criticism was that the carpets were a little bit grubby and could do with a wash... a quick once over with a vax ought to do it!

Lovely clean hotel, friendly staff, tasty breakfast, good location to Cathedral and Market Square. We ate out so no comments on restuarant but it looked nice. The hotel would benefit from a lift, we had to carry two heavy cases 3 flights of stairs. The hotel has a small car park but it was full during our stay so we parked in a nearby car park which was low cost but required a 5 min walk carrying luggage to the hotel. Good overall stay and we would go back if we were in the area in future.

The room wasnt ready on arrival and when it was, it was dirty so we had to request it be cleaned and even then the bins weren't emptied and empty shower gel bottles replaced etc. Location was good and we were impressed with the breakfast. Shame about the cleanliness because otherwise would have been an enjoyable stay.

All rooms appear to be on the third floor, this wasn't a problem for us but it could be for the not so fit. No offer was made to help with bags. The room was quite small but clean. All meals were really good, except for one morning when we waited ages for our cooked breakfast ... eventually left without it. Staff very friendly. Good value for money. The parking was a huge issue, we were really fed up trekking to and fro to car park.

I spent three days in the Royal Oak but I think housekeeping only bothered to visit for one of those days. They forget to mention on the website that there is NO parking at all. The rooms were poorly designed with no mirrors or towel rails. The shower temperature ranged from very hot to scalding. the windows in our room didn't shut properly, the curtains didn't fit meaning that light flitered in all night. If you do still go pack light as you have to drag your bags up several flights of stairs and through 2 locked doors. its a shame as it wouldn't take a lot to improve this hotel.

Having steered clear of accommodation in pubs since a nightmare experience in Matlock, we were delighted with our stay at the Royal Oak, Ripon. Located only a few yards from the Market Place in one direction and 2 mins from Ripon Cathederal in the other, this 4 star rated Guest House made the ideal overnight stay.
I booked for 3 adults and we were given Room 1. A nice big room, with tasteful contemporary decor. The black leather double divan and matching leather sofa bed (double) had immaculate crisp white bedding with fat feather pillows and duvet. Plenty of wardrobe space, drawers and dressing table with good mirrors near a power point (one for the girls). A selection of teas and fresh ground coffee with cafetier and kettle (no biscuits though!) plus a flat screen tv.
The bathroom was gorgeous with modern white suite, creamy white wall tiles and stone floor tiles and smelt lovely as you walked in. Lots of fluffy white towels.
We had our own front door key to a separate entrance, so did not have to walk through the bar.
Breakfast was a selection of fresh fruits, juice and cereal with a main course choice of Full English (including black pudding) or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, all freshly cooked to order - not sitting under a lamp for hours!
Would recommend it to anyone.
