“good real ale pub”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

Very friendly and helpful staff, and the real ale was very good.We stayed for one night as we were attending Ripon races. The room we had was nice but a little overpriced at £100 per night. This view was mainly because we didn't get much sleep as we were at the front of the pub overlooking the main street where very loud people going past until the early hours of the morning.Breakfast was OK but nothing special. If we return to Ripon races I would look for somewhere with better value although I would repeat that the staff were exceptionally helpful and polite

Room Tip: Not at the front of the pub

I actually chose to stay in Ripon as I had never been there before and we were going to York. I was not disappointed.
It was difficult to find the car park but we did through a narrow street.
The fist thing I noticed was how friendly and helpful the staff were, definitely know how to make you feel welcome and it works.
The room wasn’t big but it was comfortable and we had a great sleep.
We ate in the Pub below and what a fantastic choice of dishes on the menu, great breakfast as well
Really good value.
We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms on lower floors suffer from street noise

Just spent 2 nights here & would recommend this hotel for lodgings & food to anyone. Fantastic food, great service, comfortable rooms in the heart of Ripon. Beds very comfortable with black out curtains, slept very well. Shower was fantastic, very powerful. Breakfast was a good standard especially the sausage :))

We went here for lunch after a great walk at nearby Greweltorpe. The staff were friendly and the food was delicious, well cooked and plentiful. Do make sure you leave room for pudding especially their sticky toffee pudding with peanut butter ice cream which my husband raved over. I chose the ice cream and they had some really great flavours like double chocolate, with big lumps of chocolate in, coconut & lime, strawberries & cream and lemon curd - delicious. Only wish this was our local but we were on holiday from Derbyshire.

We stayed overnight and used the restaurant and had a very comfortable stay at the Royal Oak. The beds are good and the room cool and quiet. The breakfast was great, as good as a much more expensive hotel. The evening meal was fine, decent pub food but don't expect top restaurant quality. Its very good value - both the restaurant and the rooms. We would stay again if we needed to be in Ripon.

I was surprised by my boyfriend (now fiancé) to a night at The Royal Oak on the 21st March. Yes he asked the question whilst we were there (I said yes!) That takes me to my first point. The people who work at The Royal Oak were lovely, they were generally excited and made our stay very special. They put champagne on ice, rose petals on the bed, flowers and candles in the room. My partner said he told them he was planning to propose and they exceeded his expectations. He looked at other hotels in Ripon previously which were a lot more money and was simply told about 'proposal packages', he was completely put off by this hence why he chose The Royal Oak. The staff wanted to be a part of it and put a personal touch to the plans.

The food was AMAZING! I had the pork and my partner had the steak, both cooked perfectly. The breakfast was also very good with lots of choice.

Good location too - the cathedral is worth a visit. Will definitely go back.

It's the third time I've visited Ripon and the third time I've had the genuine pleasure to visit this wonderfully traditional pub. The atmosphere is really relaxed - and very welcoming. The main thing that strikes you when you walk through the door is how happy the staff are. This translates into great service and also very happy customers. Their menu is extensive and they have a wide choice of drinks on offer at a reasonable price for Ripon. Wish there was a pub like this on our doorstep !
