“Lunch or supper upstairs in the Long Room.”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

Love this place with it's laid back all day snacks in the beautiful rooms with views of the river. We were lucky enough to enjoy a fine farewell dinner upstairs to mark the retirement of a good friend. The staff open the room upstairs and cater for private parties by prior arrangement. This is a very well run set up and the cooking first rate. Not at all the starchy institutional feel we had half expected from the NT. Well done.

“Very pleasant place to snack down by the river.”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

Like this place. Daytime food, teas, ice cream and occasional private dining in the upstairs room. All very well done and fitting for the building and idyllic rural and traditional setting.

“Excellent tea and more down by the Quay.”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

There was a listing for this lovely place some years ago but some misguided soul thought that the reviews were about the Edgecumbe Arms pub at Cremyll so relabelled and relocated everything to The Torpoint area. Now everything can start again.

The National Trust Cotehele Estate comprises the large house and outbuildings some distance higher up the hill together with much surrounding gardens and land but also the Quay on the River Tamar which used to be very busy. So much that there was a thriving pub here also called the Edgecumbe Arms. As the river trade dropped away and the estate passed to the Trust much renovation and restoration was carried out. The quay is the permanent home of the Tamar sailing barge the Shamrock and there are usually one or two other classic boats moored or in the small docks. The discovery centre provides lots of historical information.

The old pub has been well restored and is now effectively a pleasant old building with tea rooms serving cream and cheese teas all day all week but more exotic tea and cake on a couple of afternoons at weekends. Ice cream is also available to eat in or wander off with. We especially like the private booking of the long upper room with good river views where we have been to a couple of excellent suppers celebrating retirements and anniversaries of good friends . The catering and cooking by the Edgecumbe staff was first rate.

As with so much of National Trust stuff you have to keep a sharp look out for the road signs and make sure you know which building you are looking out for when you get here. I suggest that you come down, use the ample car park by the river and take a good walk ending up in the tea rooms.
