We had a great time here with our little bison frise Misty. This delightful place is a home from home with a huge bed and plenty of room for our portable kennel for night time. There was lots of space and the theme of the Warren delightful and pleasant. Wish we could have stayed longer . Our hosts were kind, thoughtful and did all they could to help make our stay comfortable and special. In fact , we would prefer to keep this place a secret so we will always be able to stay here. Breakfast just superb with fresh bread and other goodies available to suit our wishes,
There is no problem parking. Our little dog was welcomed too. What more could anyone wish for ???? Thanks Kate and Allan .We will be back !

Room Tip: Dog friendly and a delightful place

On arriving we were greeted by Kate and Alan and a waggy tail from Hattie. Kate put the kettle on straight away whilst we unloaded the car and settled ourselves including Tyler (our dog)!! Hospitality throughout our stay was exceptional with little personal touches thrown in i.e Tyler had a specially cooked sausage for breakfast every day. The bed was large and extremely comfortable, ( I prefer the room to be cool at night, and my daughter prefers it to be warm), and we both slept "like logs". Breakfast was scrummy with homemade bread, jam and marmalade (don't forget to leave room for this!! We would definitely recommend salmon and scrambled eggs. Alan and Kate gave us plenty of advice of local places to visit, which we did, and thoroughly enjoyed. We would love to return again soon.

Room Tip: The Warren is a great dog friendly room

I dont usually take the time to review places but felt the need to tell people about this wonderful place. From start to finish you cant fault this place. We had a biking weekend, Alan chatted through local routes, recommended pub and cafe stops en route and printed off maps 4 us. We played chess on the family chess board, nestled in the comfy sofa. The breakfast is professionally and very quickly served with homemade bread and jams, oatcakes, and of course fried breakfast. While you wait there is freshly chopped fruit, yoghurt and cereal. I cant speak highly enough of Kate and Alan who treated you more like new friends than paying guests. Thank you for a lovely weekend!

My husband and I have just had the best stay with Alan and Kate at Sheriff Lodge. On arrival we were greeted and shown to our room The Warren which is the pet friendly room. We had our little dog with us. Alan offered us cups of tea or a glass of sherry and told us where we could get an evening meal...The drawing room is beautiful and not only is there a laptop, dvd library and lots of local info to read..there is also a small fridge with complementary soft drinks...some lovely personal touches..the breakfast is amazing with home baked bread and conserves...I seriously can't recommend this enough..we will return asap! Thank you for a brilliant time Alan and Katex

We stayed at this guesthouse when we were looking for somewhere near Rowsley where our friends were staying. We booked last minute and were accommodated. We stayed in a lovely double room called The Nest - very tastefully decorated, neat (not at all shabby) with fresh yellow roses in the room which was a nice extra touch. The room was a good size with all the amenities you would expect, and the bathroom was lovely as well - a good size too with a clean wide bath, fresh fluffy towels including a flannel which I always think is a good sign!
On arrival we were met by Kate the very welcoming hostess, and offered tea and cakes, and informed about the free sherry available which was heartily appreciated!
Breakfast was top notch - almost everything was homemade including lovely fresh bread, and there was plenty of variety with the option to tailor your order.
Lovely place would recommend it.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Nest which was at the top of the house (so no noise from rooms above, although I do...

Sheriff Lodge is the best guest house we have ever stayed in. From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave, you are handsomely looked after. On arrival, the owners gave us a warm welcome and great recommendations of local restaurants and things to do. We showed interest in a restaurant and - unprompted - they called up to check table availability and serving times on our behalf before drawing us a map of how to get there. The room we stayed in was immaculate and very comfortable - massive bed, own entrance, good selection of books and dvds, total privacy. The breakfast was out of this world - beautifully cooked with a huge choice and added extras such as homemade bread and preserves and served in a really beautiful room. This place offers incredible value for the rates charged. It truly exceeded all our expectations and is a huge credit to Kate and Alan.

If you are looking for a traditional guest house - look no further. A warm welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Great bedroom facilities - I was shown to the 'owl room' on the top floor of the lodge. Looks like all rooms are themed which shows that extra thought has been given to making your stay memorable.
Freshly baked bread and home made jam etc and an extensive breakfast menu. Why go anywhere else in Matlock. Thanks for a lovely overnighter - made a lonely traveller very welcome.
