I can only agree with everything already said about Scarthin Books, Great seasonal veggie and vegan food served by polite and helpful staff. Child friendly too - I find some independent book shops can be a little stuffy. Not Scarthin though. The only thing I can add is to recommend that visitors put on an extra hour (or so) parking. Time kind of evaporates once you're inside!

Tucked away in Cromford, Scarthin books is a bookworm's paradise, you could literally get lost browsing its endless stacks of books, spread over several floors. There's a café too for when you have exhausted your literary needs.

What a great place to stop off for a meal and a chance to browse what seems like every book ever printed. Beware though once you enter you may be some time as you browse through book shelves that take up every little bit of free space.
Also the food was v.v.good and served by friendly and helpful staff.
Its a bit like a compressed version of the Alnwick Station Book Shop (also very good)
Lots of nice places to visit nearby in Cromford, lovely walks along the canal and a bit of industrial heritage at the Cromfor Mill.

If a cafe in a bookshop makes you think of Waterstones, think again and visit Scarthin Books near Matlock!

A quirky old house with new & second hand books filling every room ( and staircase, window sills etc) and a veggie cafe serving drinks & meals, with racks of magazines if you haven't bought a book yet!

Don't be put off if you're not veggie, the Homity Pie is delicious and filling and would satisy anybody. It well deserves its previous reviews.

a very nice vegetarian cafe with an excellent bookshop included..!

we have lots of times over the years and we always enjoy it..
we know of no other place like it anywhere.

we say to people we meet that they must visis Cromford to see where the industrial revolution started.

Staff are always friendly and efficient and quietly enthusiastic.

The view from the front terrace is really good!
