Review of Winnat's Pass

Winnat's Pass
Ranked #20 of 44 things to do in Hope Valley

I'm very lucky driving up Winnats pass every week to work, approaching it from Castleton is the best.
The pass opens up and starts climbing and twisting to the summit.
Sheep live wild on the pass so please take care if driving, they do stray into the road.
It's a Haven for walkers pot holers and tourists, once reaching the top you can carry on to Mam Tor.
Speedwell Cavern is very popular at the gateway to the pass, open most of the year.
It's a old tin mine were you go down lots of steps to reach the bottom, there you board a boat and sail along the old workings.
The roof is very low so if you don't like small spaces give it a miss, as you lay down in places.
Castleton is a fab base to explore the peaks, and blue john carvern only place in the world were blue john is found!
Lots of hotels in Casleton and Hope, all full of history and local charm.

I regularly drive through the Winnats Pass travelling to work and I enjoy it every time.

A gorge reminiscent of an Alpine pass, it is steep sided and quite spectacular. The road itself is narrow and there is a cattle grid at each end.

Exciting to walk through too, but do not take any plants away with you as it is a place of special scientific interest.

There are caverns to visit here. At the top is the Blue John Mine and at the bottom Speedwell cavern with its underground boat journey.

Well what can you say it,s Winnats Pass, high, steep, great views, but it's a pass, somewhere you go through to get somewhere else. It's always worth taking this route though as the view is great, but be prepared for daft cyclists making a nuisance of themselves!
