“Average is optimistic”
Reviewed July 12, 2014 via mobile

Went to bakewell for a day out today, very lovely little town and have visited the Castle Inn before for food. Using their 2 for £9.99 menu we ordered ham, egg and chips and macaroni cheese. After a short wait, the bar lady brought the meal over to us. She herself was very friendly. The food arrived on very large plates which totally dwarfed the portions. The ham was claimed to be hand sliced but looked more like something they picked up from the co-op, proceeded to dip a chip into the egg, expecting a nice runny yolk from the "free range" egg... No such thing. As over cooked as you could get it. I still felt glad though looking at my partners plate. The most sorry looking macaroni I've seen. Heinz tins look, and even taste, nicer. Very bland and quite rubbery. The garlic bread however was very nice. Drinks were as to be expected for price, and the place itself has a nice feel about it. They let dogs in too which is good. However would not be returning. Bakewell has far better on offer.

“The worst meal in the world”
Reviewed July 11, 2014

The Castle is a pub restaurant that has recently changed hands for the worse. On arriving you have to get a ticket for the car park or face a hundred pound fine. 'We are very strict,; said the rotund girl behind the bar. 'Are these samples?' I said, picking up little jars of beer by the pumps. 'Can you take them away?' She frowned more darkly than her tattoos. 'If you do it's stealing.' A waiter dressed in black continued this authoritarian theme by reminding us about the car park. But I was taking my elderly mother out for a treat so I did not complain. But then we got the food. The fish and chips must have been warmed up and let go cold many times. It was tasteless and nasty and the flesh of the nameless sea creature dry in a sickly batter. The mushy peas had not been cooked at all and the tartare sauce was salad cream. My wife's 'Caesar Salad' was revolting, sub Bernard Matthews frozen chicken pulled apart with processed cheese on a bed of wet lettuce covered in the same salad cream. This is the worst meal I have had in the world and that includes the former East Germany. It should be visited by those chefs who want to see how British restaurants used to be. Only do not eat here. And be very careful about the car park.

Beautiful Peak District setting and surroundings with an `oldy worldy` pub to relax in whilst enjoying very good service and hearty /good value food.

Good food, friendly staff quick service on a busy night. Had
Gammon steak with fresh pineapple. Good end to our climbing holiday in the Peak.

“Great food at reasonable prices”
Reviewed June 26, 2014 via mobile

My mother and I had dinner here on two occasions whilst we were in Bakewell.

The meals are excellent value for money with delicious fresh ingredients and generous portions.
The only thing was when ordering the half a roast chicken we were told we cannot have gravy as it only comes with selected meals.
Surely, even for a small fee, a little boat of gravy could have been provided as without it the chicken was a little dry.

Otherwise a lovely little pub. Lots of locals and Claire behind the bar was lovely.

Would eat here again for sure.
