We stayed one night in room 1 (The Tissington Trail) Awe inspiring views of Monsal Dale, even the murky weather does little to detract from the view.

The room is slightly dated but absolutely in keeping with the nature of the hotel. Chairs in the bay window allowed us to sit and admire.

The bed was comfortable and cosy.

The small decanter of sherry, chocolates and home made shortbread hinted at days gone past.

The breakfast was beautiful, freshly cooked and promptly served.

If there is one, small, criticism, it is that there is no shower curtain.

A wonderful place, I could die here happy.

We are delighted with your review and all comments are to be passed onto our team. We have investigated the lack of shower curtain in your room when you visited and are now awaiting delivery of one shower curtain which will be fitted once it has arrived so please ensure you ask for your tissington trail (room1) when you are next visiting the Monsal Head Hotel.

We have been coming to Derbyshire for many years and love going to Monsal head for the views and to the stables bar for a meal and a drink. We love the rustic charm of the Stables bar and hope that doesn't change.Walkers with or without dogs but usually with their wet coats and boots are as welcome as every one else and that is what we love .
We have been staying on a caravan site locally this week and after going for a 10k walk around Monsal dale today and getting quite wet, we were looking forward to a late lunch/early tea in the Stables.we were warmly welcomed by the young lady in the bar. She was attentive to everyone who came in, the food arrived promptly and was enjoyable.
The quirky decor, the wonky floors, the welcoming wood burner, all go to make this place special.
We love the ambience here so ,please, don't change.! I know we are not alone in this.
I can't review the actual Hotel as we have never stayed here but, to the manager, you have a special place here,so look after it!

Room Tip: The rating is just for the Stables Bar.

Thank you for your wonderful review and realistic feedback regarding your recent visit. As the new general managers at the Monsal Head Hotel myself and my partner Hannah are committed to providing the best possible service combined with excellent food in a relaxed enviroment with beautiful views. We are intending over the coming months and even years to ensure refurbishments take place but we will always honour the beauty that the Monsal Head Hotel and Stables bar has to offer.

We booked the Monsal Head as a last minute night away. I booked over the telephone with the hotel and the lady who dealt with the booking was very helpful and efficient, booking us into a room with beautiful dale views.

On arriving at the hotel we were greeted by the manager who quickly checked in and made us feel welcome.

The bedroom was a good size and the bed very comfortable. We felt that the room could do with a lick of paint and the bathroom was in need of modernisation. As mentioned above, the room had wonderful views but the windows could do with a clean/perhaps replacement in order to fully appreciate the view! Although as we only stayed one night these things did not overly bother us.

We were booked into the restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was busy and had a good atmosphere. The food was delicious, the lamb main was particularly good and cooked perfectly. The chocolate dessert gorgeous - the perfect way to finish my meal!

At breakfast there was a good selection of food. We chose the full breakfast and this was equally as good as the evening meal - the bacon and sausages were lovely and none of it felt greasy!

All in all we had a very enjoyable stay.

We would like to thank you for you r genuine review which reflects everything that is the Monsal Head Hotel. As the new general managers we are committed to making the hotel the premier hotel of choice whenever visiting the peak district. Plans are in the pipeline for all repair works to take place and we are in final discussions regarding a light refurbishment of all our period rooms.

Your comments regarding dinner service have been relayed to our whole team including the kitchen brigade, service can only be amazing when you have an amazing kitchen team behind you and we believe that is what we have at this hotel.

We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

We stayed at the hotel last weekend (Sept 28th) and we cannot rate this highly enough. We had a lovely room - one of the recently refurbished ones - and had a great stay. All the staff were fantastic and the food was absolutely wonderful! Full marks to the chef and the waiting staff! We would definitely recommend this hotel and the restaurant. Thank youfor making our weekend away so special.

Room Tip: We stayed in an executive room - lovely!

My family and I dined at the Mondal Head Hotel in July. There were five of us, and we all had different dishes for starters and main courses. All of our meals were first class.
The Local Gloucester old spot pork Scotch egg was a hit with my son.
The service was efficient and friendly, and the views are lovely.
My dad left his glasses there, and the staff at Monsal Head sent them on to him - and he lives in London. Excellent service

Thank you for your wonderful review. It is nice to know we were able to cater for your family in all areas. Your comments will be fedback to my whole team regarding your visit.

With regards to the glasses we always try to ensure that all lost property is returned to their rightful owners irrelevant of where they may be located in the country, this will surely add to guests visits as is proven on this occasion.

We look forward to welcoming you again.

We held our wedding reception at Monsal Head 24 years ago. The food then was unusual but plainly cooked and plentiful and the service was friendly and unpretentious. We have been back a couple of times, caught a couple of decent but perhaps over ambitious meals, seen a not entirely convincing makeover from chintzy English to Mediterranean, and always regarded it as special to us, but generally rather quirky.

We chanced by yesterday, with the car parks and local lanes packed with families enjoying the Indian Summer. It seemed impossible there would be an unbooked table - but in fact there was only one other table taken in the main restaurant. Later a number of families arrived, but with so many on the doorstep, and with food of the quality of that we had, it seems extraordinary that the main restaurant is not busier. I can only think of a couple of things - the pricing could be offputting (we overheard a couple say 'we aren't paying those prices' as we arrived'), perhaps because expensive and modest are intermingled on the menu of both restaurant and bar, and service for families seemed a little slow - but perfect for our leisurely lunch. Anyway, our food was excellent value, and stunningly cooked and presented. The soufflé we shared was imaginatively paired with sweet, young beetroot, plump raisins and tangy orange curd. The main courses - homemade beef and potato pie in a light, crisp pastry, loaded with tender, slow-stewed beef, and a varied, punchy and filling bouillebaisse, were perfect. We again shared a dessert of lime posset, sorbet and rich, tart forest fruit compote. A really excellent value high quality half bottle of champagne was an anniversary treat that helped it go down. Yes, the loos were scruffy (memories of my best man being sick in there all those years ago were not erased);yes, we spent an hour and a half eating; yes, we spent £60 on lunch for two. But this was consistently the best food we have had in a long time, the service was informal, helpful, and knowledgeable, and the location has few equals in the world. Maybe the issue is that Monsal Head can't quite decide what kind of restaurant it is. Bless it for that - next time it might be burger and chips we want after a long walk. But, one way or another, we will be back.

Thank you for your excellent review it is a personal compliment to see that my team looked after you in a manner that you would expect and that the food was to your liking.

As the new general Managers myself and my partner Hannah are aware that there are areas of the hotel that require a little more attention than others and the Toilets in the Longstone restaurant are on that list. There is to be remedial work taking place very shortly with a full refurbishment to take place next year.

We are very glad that you chose the monsal head hotel for your dining experience and definately welcome you back in the hear future wether it be to the restaurant or just for a coffee and a quick bite to eat in our stables bar.

Kindest regards
Keith Robson

What a shame that we had to wait over an hour between courses for our lunch on Sunday.
We were on a family day out and this really made the end of the day quite sour as we had to rush to get back to our various appointments.
There was no real apology and nothing was offered to compensate.
Only offered one drink in the two and a half hours we were there!

As the new general manager of the Monsal head hotel I would like to pass on my personal apologies for your believed shortfalls in service for Sunday Lunch. We appreciate all feedback and can only improve once this feedback has been given.

I have also investigated with my colleague who was working shift that day and they have commented that the restaurant was extemely busier than anticipated on your visit and although there were several delays they were not as extensive as you have stated.

If ever visiting the area again please do not hesitate to contact myself personally and I will endeavour to ensure you have an enjoyable return visit.
