“Great, even in the rain!”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

Decided on a spur of the minute walking break.
Luckily only an hour and a half drive so managed to get in a big walk before checking in then again the next day. Walking here is spectacular.
The hotel is lovely. We had a recently refurbished room which was extremely comfortable. The Stables Bar was very friendly and buzzing with life. The food in the restaurant was FANTASTIC! Service also excellent - very attentive and friendly.
Will definitely repeat this weekend.

Room Tip: Room 6 has been recently refurbished, but I am sure the other rooms are lovely too.

Varied and interesting menu and excellent meal. The well trained and knowledgeable staff were brilliant in dealing with my husband's gluten free requirements.

We will be back to stay overnight. Such a pleasure to be in a restaurant where they understand the importance of serving gluten free food with the minimum of fuss.

Lovely little hotel in a fantastic spot, overlooking Monsal Head (local beauty spot) and with beautiful countryside views all around. Our room was a good size, very clean and nicely furnished, with a good size ensuite with double walk in shower (recently refurbished I guess). Breakfasts were excellent with good choice, including smoked salmon and kippers as well as the usual breakfast fayre. We did have dinner on one night, but found it a bit pricey by local standards. Staff were friendly and helpful. One or two minor criticisms - our bed was rather uncomfortable - very soft and lumpy. Our room was not made properly on any of the four days we stayed - that is the duvet was simply pulled up with the bottom sheet not even smoothed (I know that might sound a bit petty, but one of the pleasures of a hotel stay for me is to come back to a beautifully made bed!). And reception was never manned so we always had to go and find somebody to collect our key when we returned. On the whole though, a enjoyable stay, slightly on the higher end of budget but without all the little things that make a higher price worthwhile.

Room Tip: We had a front room overlooking the road, which was surprisingly busy and therefore quite noisy. Pl...

A really good menu and lovely food. I had a Scotch egg to start followed by roast cod with muscles and curry sauce. Both great dishes although I did expect the scotch egg would have been served warm.
My only criticism is that the restaurant itself could do with updating. It was a beautiful old room with some lovely original features however it could certainty do with a fresh coat of paint. There was also a large area that was heavily stained and cracked where there must have been a water leak at some point. I know it is a strange criticism but the art work next to our table was of dolphins, bearing in mind this is restaurant is in the middle of the peak district I am certain there is art work available that would be more in keeping with the surroundings. The wine glasses were too thick and heavy and more like the 'Value Range' from that well known supermarket. I think the napkins had also been bought from the same range. The overall feel in the room was more café than fine dining which was such a shame given the quality of the food.

Just returned from a two night break at Monsal Head Hotel, weather was gorgeous when we arrived and the views were amamzing, Staff were extrememly friendly and helpful although extremely busy. Food in hotel was excellent and very good value for money on the dinner deal. Full a la carte menu available and specials, Choice of eating in the restaurant, your table is yours for the whole evening or the stables bar where its a little more rustic and you have to go up and order your food. In both places the staff are very attentive and the food is delicious.
Lots of places to visit nearby and parking is free if there is a space in the hotel car park but it does fill up. Room (1) was satisfactory, had lovely views, they are in the process of a refurbishment and when this is complete I am sure they will be stunning. Decanter of sherry and home made shortbread a quirky touch. Only down side the main restaurant is a little lacking in atmosphere but its probably a listed building. Breakfast excellent.

Staff really welcoming and every member of staff was friendly and helpful. Our stay was B&B plus dinner. We particularly enjoyed the meals with plenty of choices for breakfast and the menu for dinner wide ranging in choice. We particularly like the combinations of flavours within each dish, all excellently cooked, and all served promptly. Our rooms all had the stunning view over Monsal Head, we met in each other's rooms each night for sherry (sherry provided in our rooms). It is up there as a memorable family weekend.

After a ruined meal four years ago due to it taking over 90 mins to arrive), risked another visit hoping the management might have improved the efficiency of service.

Sadly let down again. Food took 1hr 15min to arrive despite few other customers. Having waited that long with 2 small children we were eager to finish our meals and leave. Not an easy task given the £16 braised beef appeared to have been cooked for only a few minutes and was almost indelible. Luckily the dog didn't mind and discretely helped us finish it off.

I imagine if you're lucky the food may be ok, and service faster, and the location does of course compensate, but in our experience there is a very good chance of a long wait for poorly cooked food. We will leave it 10 years before trying again this time!!
