“Great hosts!! Beautiful walking area.”
Reviewed September 4, 2011

This was our first visit to the Peak District and certainly not the last. We had made reservations for 6 nights at the Old Hay Barn. Because we had 6 nights we decided to take Room 1 (The one with the sitting room). This turned out to be a big mistake. Because I am 2 meters tall I didn’t fit in the bed. Luckily room 2 came available the next day. Iain and Diana said we could use this one instead. Great service!! The bed is the same size but it doesn’t have a footboard so I could hang my feet outside. Slept like a baby that night. The room is also bigger than room1 but is doesn’t have a sitting room. But because there were no other guests we still could use it (it is a separate room) if we wanted. Iain has great knowledge of the Peak District and helped us with some beautiful walks and places to eat. The cooked breakfasts were great. We even had pancakes one day. Nothing is too much for Iain and Diana.
There is one thing we didn’t like, but this is personal, other reviewers haven’t mentioned it. The rooms are en-suite but the bathroom are separate from the bedrooms. There is a curtain as a separation between the bed- and bathroom and the rest of the house.
Unfortunately we had to break off the stay after 4 nights due to a back injury. Iain and Diana thank you for a welcome stay!

Room Tip: Tall people (over 190 cm) should take room 2. No footboard on the bed.

My partner and i stayed in this excellent accommodation for three nights. This is going to sound like a copy of other reviews, but consistency can't be faulted! Spotless, very well presented, a stunning rear garden with a view you can only dream of and fabulous hospitality that is truly, truly, genuine. Regarding the food, you can eat as much as you like, which i did with pleasure because it was so good. Nothing is too much trouble and the local knowledge is extremely helpful.

The views around the area are beautiful with plently of choice to keep you busy or relaxed! The Barn is perfectly situated to use as a base for many great choices to fill your time, with many local pubs for evening meals. Now that the tunnels have been opened up, you can easily reach other villages in plenty of time. We've been into the Peaks many times and this experience is the best so far, and we have every intention of returning, hopefully to The Old Hay Barn.

Thank you Iain and Diana for proving that qualitiy matters.

Room Tip: We had the room with the extra sitting room which is very comfortable and lovely to relax in.

My girlfriend and I spent 4 nights in what can only be described as the most beautiful accomodation I have ever stayed in. Ever! The room was amazing. Spacious, clean, cozy, had all the amenities (including a cot for our son - but no biscuits. Who cares!!), and the view? WOW! Never have I seen such a view from the bedroom window of anywhere I have stayed. We stayed in room 2 which I am glad we did. So we lost out on the sitting room in room one. The view more than made up for this. Looking out of our window, we saw a huge (and very steep) hill with loads of sheep on it. It's a wonder they didn't fall off it was so steep. Looking slightly to the right, the river Wyre trickled through the valley passing at one point, down a waterfall which you could hear from the bedroom. This made for very nice sleeping.

The house itself has been stunningly refurbished to a very high standard indeed and the conservatory (which doubles up as the dining room) overlooks the gardens too. The breakfasts were very good and the coffee even better. I don't know what it was we ate every morning, but it looked like a pancake and tasted of potato. Very good! The produce was also very good too. In response to the only semi-derogatory review on here, I really can't see what the problem was with the breakfast. Both my partner and I were more than satisfied.

The hosts (Iain and Dinana) were very nice and friendly. Possibly the most helpful people I have come across. Seeing as this was a proposal weekend (she said yes!) Iain and Diana provided us with an evening meal and advise on where I should do the deed afterwards. The meal consisted of a steak that could have been cut with a butter knife it was that tender. It was actually cut with a butter knife. And some very fresh vegies as a main. A king prawn starter and a home-made treacle pudding for dessert which we had to take home with us the next day as we were both so stuffed. They even provided us with champagne and joined in the toasting of this occasion where we chatted for an hour or so. Very nice people. It actually turned out that they knew a friend of mine from Brighton. Small world

The area! WOW. Monsal Head is simply the most amazing thing I have ever seen bar nothing. We went to Bakewell and had a Bakewell Tart. We were going to go to Buxton for some water but the lure wasn't enough for us. Chatsworth House has some stunning scenery and definitely worth a visit. It also has a farm too.

From beginning to end our stay in the Peak District was one to remember and I'm just glad I chose The Old Hay Barn's grounds as the place to begin the rest of my life with my family.
Many thanks to Iain and Diana for facilitating

Room Tip: For a view, space and a bath, book Room Two.

This barn is a modern yet sympathetic conversion of one of a few barns in a location on the river Wye.

It is quiet and tucked away with stunning views from the breakfast room with easy access to the many walks around the Monsal head area. The hosts (Iain and Diana) were happy to advise and set us up for a great walk which took us best part of the day.

We had the use of our own bathroom and sitting room, with all the usual amenities.

A very tasty and plentiful breakfast. The authentic Swedish Rosti a favourite of ours!

I would certainly stay here again if spending any more time in the Peaks. Very easy access to Bakewell and all the usual local attractions.

We loved this small but perfectly formed B&B. The Old Hay Barn perches on the edge of a mill pond in an idyllic location which is a good ramble from a couple of fantastic pubs. With only two rooms the place is private, cosy and full of character. Owners Iain and Diana were knowledgable and happy to help us with local information both before and during our visit. Whilst always on hand, they were never intrusive. A great base for exploring the Monsal Trail and an even better place to have a full English breakfast.

Superb location, outstanding accomdation, friendly hosts, excellent breakfast and very reasonable. This has to be the best B&B in the country let alone the Peak district. From the minute we arrived we were made to feel very welcome - the hosts could not do enough for us. The room was comfortable with one of the best viewsavailable - we made the mistake of not booking the room which had its own sitting room which would have been even better. The B&B is right in the heart of the peak district with excellent walks in all directions - plenty of good pub food within a short distance. We will be back.
