“Disappointing return”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

This was our second visit to the Rutland arms. We had a lovely break here 2years ago and booked again but was disappointed. The staff were on the whole very helpful and pleasant. The rooms were adequate and clean but very warm. Breakfast was average, nothing special. However the evening meal was a big disappointment. One of our party has a food allergy and even though the staff had been informed prior to us eating there the chef could not offer an alternative choice of starter. The King Prawn starter consisted of 3 medium prawns on a couple of lettuce leaves. When we complained about the size of the dish the chef was adamant that that's how it should be. In our opinion the prawns were not King Prawns and at £6 for the dish this was a tot expensive at £2 a prawn!!!! The waiter did however try to rectify the situation by offering us complimentary coffees. We are not in the habit of complaining but this experience left a nasty "taste". Other niggles were a £2.50 charge for use of credit cards and plastic cups in the bathroom. The Rutland needs to be careful it doesn't disappoint more customers in this very competitive business.

myself my wife + daughter stayed at the Rutland arms for 2 night for a family function.
All of my stay was poor, the staff were unhelpful exspecially when we went to breakfast and was told they dont have tables for 3 people so one of us would have to sit on our own !!!! even though we witnessed 4 people walking in and the same lady offered to put 2 tables together for them.
The room we stayed in was 33 and to be honest i have stayed in better travellodges or premier inn and had better service, the room were tatty and the shower was not working properly we did complain but nothing was done about it.
This was the first and last time i will be staying there the hotel manager was rude the staff in the breakfast rooms were rude aswell as we were paying £85 per night i would have expected it to be just a little bit better but i guess this is a hotel just for making money nothing else they really dont care about the people staying there.

Room Tip: look at a travellodge or premier inn there cheaper and you get better rooms and better service

I have visited the Rutland arms for the last 10 years for a mountain bike holiday. The hotel has always been good. In my opinion this was the best visit so far. Excellent breakfast with good quality ingredients plenty of tea and toast all served on a warm plate. I stayed in room 3 in the main hotel. The bed was comfy, sheets nice and crisp good pillow and plenty of hot water. The staff were perfect and very helpful. I paid £130 for 2 nights b and b which I thought was good value.

I spent two nights here recently. My positives:
- friendly and helpful reception staff
- heater in my room - I needed it as it wall cold!
- good hot shower and clean bathroom
- location- centre of town, can't miss it!
- varied and tasty breakfast included

Negatives:
- I had been out walking and got mud on my shoes. There was no obvious place outside to clean them. Given that this town is in Derbyshire where lots of walkers go, I would have thought they would be prepared for muddy shoes
- my first morning at breakfast was a busy one and the breakfast room attendant was having a hard time getting to everyone. It didn't look like he had much help to call on. My second breakfast was less busy and things flowed better.

This is a very clean, friendly hotel but is expensive for what you get. The comments made by earlier reviewers are fair- we stayed in room 29 and our friends in room 30- both were in the block over the road from the hotel, both rooms were small, in the case of our room- the bed was very comfortable- although the bright pink walls did smack the senses a little. The breakfast was good, but a bit slow- and we had to be out of the breakfast area on Sunday to accommodate a wedding fayre. All in all, honest, clean but expensive- Bakewell however is lovely and well worth a trip.

Stayed overnight to attend a family function elsewhere in town. Parking was very busy and full marks to the staff who were very accommodating in getting us parked to go off to the function. We stayed in room 10. ( mentioned in another review) and the room was small but the bed was comfortable adequate for an overnight stay. There were some minor issues with the bathroom which needed sorting out.

The breakfast service was very slow ( we understand there was a issue with a replacement chef) and the quality was no more than adequate.

Overall the staff we had contact with were friendly and attentive - doing their best to make our say enjoyable ; the location was very central. Would we stay again ? Yes probably , but the hotel needs to raise it's game in terms of quality to justify the rates charged.

The most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept in - thank goodness only for 1 night. Filthy windows. Partially redecorated, but left the wallpaper hanging off the ceiling in the bathroom, which had obviously suffered from damp - hence the revolting smell! Two cold taps in the shower, but one did run hot, shower couldn't be hung on the wall as the fixtures weren't compatible - which is just bizarre. Staff friendly enough, but this hotel is about making money not an enjoyable experience for its customers. It's not recommended by me unless you would like a Fawlty Towers type stay.
