“Great Guest House in Bakewell”
Reviewed July 1, 2012

We stayed there this weekend and couldnt have asked for anymore.

It was very close to the centre of Bakewell, just a 5 minute walk.

We were able to leave our car at the Guest House during Saturday whilst we wandered around Bakewell.

When we checked in we were delighted with the room, large airy, good facilities, nothing more we could have wanted.

Madeline & Louis were so welcoming and we felt instantly at ease and comfortable at Terra Firma.

The breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice.

Would reccomend this Guest House to anyone!

13th/16th June. My Wife and I have just spent 4 lovely days in Bakewell, we can say what a lovely Guest House this is. Madeline & Louis were excellent hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. It was home from home and it is so well placed for the town. We will definitely stay her next time we come back to Bakewell. The room was large enough and the bed was very comfortable which is a must after a day out walking!! Nice Many thanks Madeline & Louis for making our stay such a memorable one.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 3

We stayed here for three nights from the 28th of may 2012. and found it very nice. Madeline & Loius were very good host and were very helpful and nothing was to much trouble for them. the front room we had was excellent no complaint about that wolud not mind the size of the room and bathroom at our house plus the bonus of a soft matress. next the food plenty to choose from and very well cooked and presented except when madeline gave us chatsworth spicy sausages by mistake but they were far to spicy for me. but besides that cannot fault the food. the house is 2 minutes from the town with a good pub seconds away. there are plenty pubs serving good food all prices various but you get plenty. we had meals in three different pubs and all were good.the bakewell folk are very friendly and all spoke to you as you were a local. we would recommend the terra firma and would use again evry time we will come back to bakewell. many thanks madeline & loius many thanks for making our stay so pleasant.

Room Tip: ask for the front bedroom very big and comfortable

Arriving to the smell of freshly baked bread and a friendly greeting from the owners set the scene for our stay. The guest house is ideally suited for exploring the Peaks - there are lots of walks to be had right on the doorstep.
We found the guest house to be above average due to the small extras that all added up to make it a great experience. From the sachets of hot chocolate, fresh milk for coffee/tea when we arrived and jars of cookies in each room to the toiletries left for us to use they were all lovely touches. What made this place different from others we've stayed in is the fact that it is so homely with some gorgeous artwork/photo's around the place. It really did feel like Madeline and Louis were inviting you into their home.
There was a large choice of food available at breakfast and all well which should suit most people including vegetarians like me. The rooms were spacious, clean and bright. The en suite facilities were of a good quality with the big bath perfect for after a day on the hills.
Our trip was cut short but I am sure that we'll return to Bakewell and would stay here again without hesitation.

Madeline and Louis run a charming guest house right on the edge of the town centre in charming Bakewell. We stayed for 3 nights in Easter week and we found it to be very good value for money. We were treated well and made to feel welcome and the room was very spacious and nicely furnished with a homely feel. Agree with a previous reviewer that the rule whereby you must vacate the room from 10am - 5pm each day is a tad surprising and maybe could have been indicated better on the website / booking confirmation email. However, there is so much to do in the town and surrounding areas you won't have any trouble filling your days with fun and fulfilling activities. Check out the array of friendly local pubs and restaurants which offer hearty food and drink at very reasonable prices. Also, don't miss out on trying bakewell tarts and many other sweet delicacies in the many bakeries in town! You certainly build up an appetite on the many walking trails in the area!! Overall, a very nice place to stay with lovely hosts!

Room Tip: Room 1 has beautiful view and large Bay Window at Front

Reading the reviews on this website we were expecting a warm welcome at the Terrafirma. However this certainly didnt happen on our arrival....
Maybe the owners were a bit put out as we arrived earlier than expected or maybe it was our Manchester accents Anyway as we arrived the owners were on there way out and instead of a welcome they just told us they were out for the afternoon and check in was 5pm with that they proceded to drive away...
We busied our selves in the town and got back to the b&b at 5.30ish the room was clean but there was no quilt cover on the quilt which is very odd...Breakfast was chosen the same night via a tick list which we thought rather silly as there was only 6 residents staying and taking orders on the morning of breakfast would have been preferable Breakfast was fresh and hot ...However we would not reccomend this hotel due to the rediculous check in check out times and the lack of attention to detail with the housekeeping it occured to us that the owners didnt have there heart in the buisness they were just doing the bare minimum.....

We stayed here as a couple at the end of September 2011 for a 2 day weekend break in Bakewell. I recall that we stayed in room 2.

Good Points :
The bedroom was very spacious and the en-suite bathroom not lacking in space.
Both rooms were spotlessly clean and there was a good selection of books and magazines to read in addition to the TV.
The hosts (Madeline & Louis) are both friendly. Breakfast was ok.
There is parking space and the house is only a short walk from the town centre.
Excellent value for money.

Bad Points.
The bathroom bin had not been emptied when we arrived - wasn't unpleasant but could have been.
The mattress was very firm to the point that we found it a bit uncomfortable BUT I would say that this is just a preference thing not a damning criticism.

Observations.
House rules sheet in room - tone of the rules is kind of at odds with the nature of the hosts.
I would advise that the house rules be listed on the website in an obvious place.
Not too noisy.

Overall - would recommend to someone for a long weekend break.
