Barrow Hill is a great attraction in the North Derbyshire area, not only because it's still very much a working roundhouse, but also because of it's history and the atmosphere of the centre. It's open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays and free (although a donation is appreciated) and is home to many steam and diesel engines, workshops and rail preservation groups. They have regular open days which are always worth attending and host other talks and events throughout the year. I really enjoy just going along on a lazy Sunday and strolling around the trains, there's also a cosy cafe which serves drinks and small meals and snacks. Well worth visiting if you're a rail enthusiast, family or just passing by!
