Now I am a nightmare to serve, I admit it. No, I'm not rude or embarrassing, just Wheat and Dairy Intolerant, and for most restaurants up North, down south, east, west, Wales, Scotland and probably the entire island of Ireland, that is akin to saying you have a very inconvenient and unwelcome culinary disability. It puts them on the spot, but somehow I am always the one that feels guilty for being such a nuisance. Not so at Calabria they did their very best to give me breakfast without making it essential to visit their extremely wonderful toilets. ( Go and see the mirror in the Ladies. Love it) It turned out they don't keep Soya milk, so hot chocolate was off, but the charming waitress asked where she could buy small cartons to keep in the cupboard for other dairy free customers in future. ( Most supermarkets do a single cream 250 ml carton, in case you are wondering how to cope with a dairy-free visitor.) Next problem was how to achieve their famously perfect scrambled eggs? Calabria's rich golden eggs make it quite delicious, but without cream or butter?. No idea how it was done, but the result was truly scrumptious, and it was served on a little ciabatta Gluten Free roll - which they fortunately did have in stock. My Blood orange juice was delicious, and for Himself, a mocha coffee and regular ciabatta roll with egg, mushroom and bacon. All very nicely cooked and presented. Lovely service, lovely food, lovely start to the day.
