“Worth a visit...”
Reviewed August 2, 2014

Had seen this posted on FB so we decided to go in search. What a pleasant surprise; very welcoming and tables next to the canal. Lovely pot of tea and bacon butty with "real bread" not "cheap pappy stuff". Would recommend.

“Cafe for walkers, joggers, cyclists, boaters and anglers”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

Along the Kennet & Avon canal out of Bradford on Avon, towards Avoncliff there is a swing bridge and high pedestrian bridge over the canal, beyond which is The Boat Cafe, permanently moored on the canal. See TheBoatCafe.co.uk for further details.

It is an idyllic spot, away from the noise of any traffic other than canal boats on the Kennet & Avon and cyclists along the towpath. The Boat Cafe opened at Easter 2014 and is a welcome stop halfway between Bradford on Avon and Avoncliff, which is a regular route for many walkers, joggers, cyclists, boaters and anglers. Particularly dog walkers, which includes my wife and I.
If you follow the riverside, take the left fork up-hill towards the canal towpath, and the swing bridge and The Boat Cafe is 30 meters to the right.

The Cafe is open every day and serves tea, coffee, soup, juices, sandwiches, home made cakes and an assortment of savoury and sweet offerings. There are a few tables and chairs on the towpath-verge and plenty of seats onboard, with a log burning stove keeping the boat cosy and warm on chilly days.

Home made preserves are also sold at The Boat Cafe, which is decorated with boating paraphernalia, art and photos of the canal, boats and boating people. It's cosy and comfortable and the owner is always welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area.

For walkers with dogs, there is a bowl of water on the towpath, which is a healthier option than the canal water, and I have suggested that they add dog biscuits to their menu, for the canine visitors.

This part of the Kennet & Avon canal is accessible by pedestrians and cyclists following the River Avon and/or the canal towpath and is at a crossing over the canal giving access to the countryside and meadows to the north, Barton Farm park and the River Avon to the south, Avoncliff and the impressive 19th century aqueduct to the West and Bradford on Avon to the East.

It is a 15-20 minute stroll to or from the Tithe Barn of Barton Farm (also on Tripadvisor), and Avoncliff, either along the towpath, where lots of canal boats are moored or gently motoring along, or along the meandering River Avon where rowers and kayakers practice. Keep an eye out for ducks, swans, the occasional blue flash of kingfishers swooping for a fish, the splash of fish and the rare sighting of roe deer which can be expected along this stretch. It is also close to the Willow Maze on the meadows below the canal, next to the River Avon, which is a fun and pleasant picnicking spot.

For anglers, both on the river and canal, it is a welcome option for a hot drink and a snack, where previously the nearest watering hole was at least 20 minutes distant. The owner has told me that on match days, the Cafe will take orders and bring them to the anglers with minimal disturbance to the match. What a service!

If you are boating along this stretch, you are welcome to moor alongside and come aboard, or alternatively order from the Cafe through the hatch.

Highly recommended and I hope The Boat Cafe thrives for many years.
The bacon butties are my usual brunch while walking our dogs. Heading there now...
