“Quaint English charm”
Reviewed June 22, 2013

Thank you to the staff and especially James for making our stay at the Swan most enjoyable. We stayed for two nights in a room that was clean, comfortable and well appointed with a queen size bed (which we have found to be rare in our travels around England) and oozed the English charm we were looking for. Due to circumstances we only ate breakfast in the restaurant - which was also quite enjoyable. Staff were attententive and happy to assist. The swan was perfectly located in the centre of town and within easly strolling distance to the picturesque canals and the train station to where Bath is only a ten minute train ride away.

We had dinner here and really enjoyed it.
My partner had a roast beef dinner which was plentiful and flavoursome. I had the feta fill parcel which was very good.

The staff are very friendly and helpful which makes for a pleasurable visit. We would definitely eat there again

The Swan Hotel (AA 4 Star)is located in a real old English town with a river running just behind the Hotel. The building dates back to AD1500 with oak beams and wonky floors fantastic for the foreign traveller who is looking for a bit of old England. On arrival we were greeted by a very pleasant young man who explained all that was necessary and showed us to the thread bare carpeted stairs. Our room was a good size and appeared to be satisfactory for our needs, we were only staying 2 nights. That evening we decided to eat in the hotel as the dining area was nicely presented. We ordered our food from a very helpful waitress who appeared to be working alone this resulted in an extraordinary long wait, one other couple we spoke to waited 2 hours for their first coarse. When the food did arrive it was okay. We later went down into the cellar where they had a jazz evening which was very enjoyable.
The next morning was the first time we really noticed the condition of the room, the shower curtain was so filthy that my wife didn't shower, the grouting around the basin was black, the air extract fan didn't work and was dirty, the toilet brush was disgraceful, the waste bin lid was broken and, it didn't matter to us as we were only there for 2 nights, but there was NO draw space if you wanted to unpack. All this wasn't helped by spending a night on the squeakiest bed on the planet.
This hotel has everything going for it but it needs Management to set the standard. The staff were great but need guidance to understand what GOOD looks like.
4 star, NO, 2 at best
They did reduce the bill when I complained but I would have preferred the quality I expected and paid the full amount.

This hotel is in a great location in one of the nicest places to visit in the area and that's what it trades on

From there on down its all down hill. The decor is more rough than faded and the whole hotel looks like it could do with a serious revamp. Old world charm is one thing but this place seems to have lost it along the way abandoning it wartime make do and mend. Our shower stopped working, knobs fell off furnature, the hook in the bathroom fell off, none of the shelves were level, you get the picture.

Breakfast was good, but nothing special.

If it weren't for the location this place would not be able to get away with charging the kind of money it does and there are better hotels in the area

Room Tip: Make sure you phone to book. They seem to ignore any internet bookings and blame you for not confir...

We didn't stay here overnight, we simply visited for a meal, so I can't vouch for the rooms or the sleep quality, but our meal was very nice. The hotel looks a little tired in places, but it is charming, and clean and the dining rooms are lovely and bright and sunny and very pleasant to be seated in. The service was relaxed and our food was delicious. We all ordered off the lunch menu for the Bank Holiday Monday and had roast beef. Everything was delicious and served piping hot. Our only complaint was that the meat was a little tough.

The hotel is central and near to both parking and the river side as well as the station and places of interest in the town.

I have been staying at The Swan for many years - I come every year to stay during Badminton Horse Trials. The staff are always hugely welcoming and nothing ever seems to be too much trouble for them. The hotel itself is full of character with lots of places to hide away in a comfy chair and read. As I stay as a lone traveller I have always felt comfortable and ease in any of the public areas and have eaten in both the restaurant and bar. The food has always been excellent with plenty of choice. I could stay much closer to Badminton itself but I choose to come back because of the service the hotel provides. Many thanks to James and his friendly team for making this years stay as good as always and I will be booking shortly for next years visit.

The hotel is run down: huge poly-filled holes in the wall, buckets in the bar catching drips from the ceiling. A television that didn't work. Half filled complimentary shampoo and conditioners. The service was below average- no friendly happy greeting or farewell. The bill was incorrectly calculated and additions we hadn't taken were added. (they did then remove these).
Breakfast was poor and the service to the table worse. The curtains in the room didnt span the whole window and didn't block out any light.
This was by no means a disgusting or dirty hotel- just disappointing and dilapidated. The cost was not reflective of the experience and I certainly wouldn't go back. it was serviceable though- so if needs must don't feel afraid just don't have high hopes of a quaint country hotel.

Thank you for your review, although of course this is not how we like to be represented we understand your comments; thank you for advising us of the television, we have had the engineers out to fix the channels that were not working and certainly appreciate your feedback on the curtain in the room you stayed in, these will be replaced. On the state of the building, it certainly is a challenge to keep a 400+ year building up to scratch, the polyfilled walls were in the process of being painted, unfortunately you came in between the completion of the filler but not the paint, this is no excuse and of course there should not have been a time lag between the two.
On the buckets catching the water, yes this was very unfortunate, we had an unexpected major leak from an upstairs bathroom, the first time it has happened in over a year, again we have now fixed this and I know that due to this leak the staff were particularly stressed at the time - again this should not have showed and we are sorry all these elements marred your stay.
We would love to have the opportunity to welcome you back again and show you that this was not representative. Thank you again for your feedback.
