“Lovely mini break”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Returned from a lovely bank holiday break at Woolley Grange. Staff nice, room great, bed very comfortable. Outdoor pool, like a warm bath, indoor pool just as nice. Beautiful gardens and lovely to see the produce being used for our evening meal. Cannot fault the food, we had an amazing meal each night, and breakfast was just right. Staff were very attentive, our dog was made very welcome, although I have to comment that one guest thought it was fine to leave his dog off the lead running around the grounds and also leaving the dog tied up to a chair at breakfast whilst it barked his head off. Not fair on other guests or children, and it does state that dogs should be kept on a lead, which is only correct. I think the staff felt they could not tell this certain person that the dog should be on a lead!

We had a lovely time and have previously stayed at the Ickworth property. We may come back although I think ickworth won in terms of their grounds. A good comfortable stay.

Dear beachgirl018

Thank you for your feedback and I am so pleased you enjoyed many aspects of your stay. We warmly welcome dogs and take note of your comments. I will give the team further guidance about getting the balance right for all guests concerning dogs around the hotel. We have had some super produce from our kitchen garden this year and look forward to even more next year.

Warm wishes
Clare

Luxury is apparently a very subjective adjective! Not sure this quite hits the mark as being true luxury but it clearly has a very loyal clientele. We felt it was quite expensive for what is on offer however we can see the appeal for large family groups that return year after year.
Pros:
* Outstanding creche with wonderful, enthusiastic staff
* Great day spa for massage etc
* Outdoor pool for those rare warm summer days (of which we were fortunate to be able to enjoy whilst at Woolley Grange)
* Exceptionally well set up for young families. We were travelling with a 2yo and a 1mth old and they were very well equipped for our needs (nappy bins, travel cots, little snacks for the kids, childrens cutlery, milk delivered in the morning etc)
* Dinner in restaurant was delicious
* Great location for exploring Bradford-on-Avon (gorgeous town) and of course, Bath.

Cons:
* Seems to be some disgruntlement among restaurant and housekeeping staff. We were met with some very unfriendly staff during our stay which was a shame.
* Bedding needs serious attention - we stayed in one of the rooms in the side house and our bed was TINY and really uncomfortable; pillows were flat as pancakes and looked like they hadn't been replaced in years. Not acceptable when spending several hundred pounds a night. When we kindly requested a couple extra pillows we were met with exceptionally rude response from a member of housekeeping staff.
* It seems local families are able to purchase passes to use the grounds / services all year meaning that on a beautiful summer's day the pool and ground are inundated with local families (and mum's groups on weekdays). Given the number of paying guests already sharing the grounds, not sure how I feel about this.

Would we return? Undecided, but unlikely.

Dear Lisaski

Thank you very much for your review and feedback. I am very sorry that not all staff you encountered were positive and friendly as this is usually an aspect about which we get great feedback.

We renew bedding on a regular basis to ensure the highest level of comfort and we are double checking our stock to highlight and remove any not of the standard. All our beds were replaced within the last two years and are fitted with toppers to hopefully give a great nights sleep. Some of our beds are 4'6'' and we advise this may be the case on booking as we are aware this may not suit everyone.
Woolley is popular with local guests and generally with all the nooks and crannies we offer inside and out, does not usually feel crowded. The lovely outdoor pool was quite a magnet for guest during the beautiful summer weather.

I am really pleased that you enjoyed many other aspects of your stay and hope we can encourage you back another time soon.

Best wishes
Clare

We have just returned from a fabulous break at this hotel. Our children 2years and 4years, had a wonderful time, doing lots of swimming in the indoor pool, pond dipping in the hotel pond and generally having fun exploring the pretty grounds.
Our hotel room and bathroom was spotlessly clean and the beds had proper cotton linen on them. The staff were extremely helpful, one night after a late swim, they organised for hot scones and hot chocolate to be brought over to the spa for us at 9pm so we could feed and water the children before popping them straight into bed. With the service, food and facilities being as good as they are, meant that as parents we had a very relaxing and restful break, We will most definitely be back and sooner rather than later!

We turned up exhausted and grubby after a few nights camping, with a 3 month old baby and a 3 year old in tow. Immediately made to feel relaxed, right at home, it's gorgeous and boutique hotel on feel but utterly focused on looking after small children and giving parents some time out. Within about 15 mins of parking the car, both girls happily in the crèche and we were in our enormous roll top freestanding bath with gin and tonics. Bliss. After a rare couple of hours out we had a great time in the outdoor playground after crèche time finished; our older girl uncomplainingly ate her (delicious by any measure) supper at kids tea time - the children's menu only childish in portion size - varied, healthy, wonderful quality food. Straight after kids tea we went to watch the 6pm screening of scooby doo; then more outdoor play before bath time. The hotel babysitter turned up as booked at 8, and was lovely - she did stories and bedtime while we headed down for dinner. Restaurant is small, quiet, superb food. Next day more of the same- fabulous breakfast, outdoor swim before heading off. Whole place beautifully appointed and impervious to children's trail of carnage. Also, obviously, very breastfeeding-friendly. Only issue was that the bed had a footboard which meant my husband couldn't stretch out. So if you're tall, ask for a bed without footboard! Highly, highly recommend, this place is magic.

This was our first holiday since we had twins. They were 3.5 months old at the time of our holiday. The hotel couldn't have been more accommodating. We had travel cots, bottle warmer, steriliser, fridge, changing mat, nappy bin, all in our room. The staff were brilliant and extremely helpful, we left the girls in the crèche and they were really well looked after (even if the slept most of the time!) The hotel is situated just nicely for a trip into Bath or Chippenham. We went swimming, took advantage of the Spa, overall we had a great time and despite having the twins with us managed to totally relax.

Dear Letchworthspur

I have twins so I understand the challenge of having a chance to relax and not having to pack your car with bags of equipment. We keep developing what we offer based on feedback such as yours and our experience as parents, so thank you very much for taking the time to write a review about your stay with us.

I look forward to welcoming you back as your babies grow up.

One hour massage at the Woolley Grange spa was absolutely perfect - mostly very relaxing with a bit of rigour when necessary... exactly as requested. A rare opportunity to switch off from work and kids, it was one of the highlights of the holiday.

I will preface my review by saying that I'm an American from New York City, so my opinion of our stay at Woolley Grange is probably inherently different from the majority of the other (mostly British) reviewers. We were visiting England as tourists and wanted to stay in a unique family friendly place...which is exactly what Woolley Grange offers.

That being said, we recently spent a few nights at Wolley Grange and loved every second of our stay there. We were blessed with sunny (and rather hot) weather, so were able to enjoy all of the amenities that the hotel offers. We swam in the outdoor pool, our 5 year old had a ball jumping on the trampoline and running around the garden, she spent a good deal of time searching for tiny little frogs in the lily pond, we explored the walled garden, strolled around the property after dinner, and enjoyed all of our dinners out on the terrace.

We were very impressed with the indoor pool facility (just off the Spa) which has a super nice changing area with showers, lockers to store your things, a nice sauna and a very nice steam room. The pool itself is fairly new and very large and overlooks the lovely walled garden area.

My wife had an hour long massage at the spa and gave it two thumbs up and our daughter enjoyed a great afternoon at the Bear's Den where she did crafts and played with baby chicks. The (creche) staff was super friendly and welcoming and the facility is nicer than our very $$$ daycare in New York City! We were impressed.

We stayed in the "John Baskerville", which to us Americans, was really unique. Besides having two levels...it oozed character with its exposed old wood beams, lots of nooks and crannies, old fashioned casement windows looking out on the property, an old fireplace....all in all, lots of charm...but there was also a large, well-appointed bathroom with wonderful soaps and shampoos, a nice sitting area with a sofa (that was actually a sofabed)...and lots of closets for our luggage.

We ate breakfast and dinner in the Orangery each day and the food was all very good. For dinner, there was the option of the basic menu (burgers, fish & chips) or you could order from the a la carte menu from the adults-only dining room. I ordered from the a la carte and had some really tasty food and wine! At breakfast, they offer a wide selection of cereals, yogurts, juices, etc and if you want a cooked breakfast, there is that option as well. Food was good!

The hotel is situated very close to Bradford on Avon...close enough to walk or take a super short drive. It is a very charming little hillside town which you shouldn't miss. Very picturesque. Right near the old bridge is St. Laurence's Church, a spectacular little Anglo Saxon church ca. the 11th century! We also took a (1 hr) drive to Stonehenge one morning (remember, we are Americans--had to see it!). We left at 9AM and we were back at Woolley Grange swimming in the pool by Noon.

I've read lots of the other less favorable reviews and I am dumbfounded. Did they stay at a different Woolley Grange? The hotel (which is really a 17th c. house) has a great deal of historic charm, and you are transported to another time while you stay at Woolley Grange. It is really a unique place, and if you prefer a more cookie cutter and sterile environment, then look elsewhere. But besides the actual hotel, I found all of the staff to be very welcoming, polite, efficient...and we definitely felt like we were guests at a country house rather than at a stuffy hotel. In fact, when we arrived, we were given a tour of the hotel and shown all around the property, and then taken our room. The wait staff was also very pleasant and all of the kids fall in love with Monty, the resident dog.

All in all, I have only positive things to say about our stay at Woolley Grange. I think it is absolutely an ideal place for families with small kids, but there are plenty of amenities for couples or anyone else to enjoy.
