“A mixed bag!”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

A beautiful place to stay - for a fisherman just wanting a weekend away it would, I guess, be HEAVEN! We stayed a week and the cracks do start to show. The lodges desperately need to be updated and upgraded. Our bed was too narrow and too short and the mattress was covered with a thick plastic sheet - we got little sleep. There was not a single drawer to put clothes into and the kitchen cupboards/drawers were falling apart. Lots of condensation on the windows and over time this would probably make clothes go mouldy.

The club house was nice with a bar and restaurant (check on opening times) and the staff friendly and helpful. The only noise to disturb us was the occasional duck having an argument and we were surrounded by beautiful trees and our lodge over looked one of the fishing lakes. Parking right outside the lodge which was handy but be sure to take a torch for coming home after dark. The lakes do not have street lights etc!

Would love to go again but new accommodation please!!

Room Tip: we had Otter lodges last year and this - suggest you might get a better experience if you try the s...

We stayed in Magpie 4. We had a wonderful view across the lake. As we did not want to cook we had a very delicious meal in the restaurant, the staff were very friendly. In our 4 days we managed to see Caen Locks, The White Horse x2, Devizes and Stonehenge. The cabin was clean and had all facilities that were needed. On our arrival we were met by a very friendly guy called "Nick" who told us about the area and places of interest to visit. To say we cannot wait to go back again is an understatement!!! Hunters Moon was recommended by a friend and we will be recommending it to our friends.

Room Tip: If you want space request a Magpie Lodge,

My family is from Sussex and wanted to visit Longleat for a two day pass so we chose Hunters Moon as a base which is only a ten minute drive from the safari park. We were impressed with the location which is very quiet and the lodges surrounding the main lake has a very tranquil feel to it. The lodge which was Magpie 2 was a nice size for 2 adults and 2 children and was very clean and tidy inside and out on arrival. The lake has some very large fish in it if you like that sport, we didnt fish but it looked a great pass time for the other holiday makers there. The beds were clean and comfortable and the kitchen is small but adequate. The main restaurant and bar is very nice and we enjoyed a nice drink and meal there on our first night. We also felt some of the previous reviews on this site were harsh and comparing the prices to larger well known holiday complexes were very reasonable and probably more relaxing for couples or families with older children. We would recommend this holiday location and also the pubs and food outlets in the town of warminster which is a 10 minute walk.

Room Tip: magpie is the one to go for if you have a family of 4

We are just back from a 4 day stay at Hunters Moon and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. We found the lodge clean, comfortable and well furnished for our needs. We did buy washing up materials but all other kitchen utensils were provided.
We visited Bath (30mins away), Wells (30 mins away) and Bradford upon Avon (25 mins away) all of these towns were lovely.
We really enjoyed our short break at Hunters Moon and feel some of the negative comments on here are a little harsh. We would visit again and recommend it to others who are looking for a quiet and relaxing break.

We have stayed here several times since it first opened in the 80's, but this time, what a difference. Lake all silted up and fish struggling to survive our hot week, no longer a fishing venue. Couldn't see the ajacent river due to the 6 foot tall stinging nettles. Top lake area now appears to have become a dumping gound for all sorts of rubbish. No information book in the cabin, not even a teapot, no lids to casserole dishes, not even a sharp peeling knife. Twin beds in the second bedroom, which my daughter had, mattresses had seen better days, only springs, no filling, she had to lay duvet on matress to sleep in a bit more comfort, toilet stained and needed a good clean. Smelt like somebody had been chewing tobacco in the cabin, no fresh smell. When we left on the saturday at 10am, reception was all locked up, no goodbyes or was everything to your liking. A shame really that this place has changed so much, it was great in the past, definitely needs some money spent on the cabins and lake to bring it back up to the standard it used to be. Surrounding area of wiltshire is great to visit, but not Hunters Moon at the moment.

The fishing was poor and the lakes were unkempt and the water levels were not where they used to be.. The river at the rear of the primises did not really have any usable fishing areas. The bed was like a Japanese fouton and very low down. Quite difficult to get out of actually. I went to open a draw and the draw came away in my hand. The Ducks we felt were in need of culling as there were just too many of them and they were a nuisance It really was not Hoseason's usual high standard. Most certainly not worth the money we paid. We actually came home a day early and knew of others that had done likewise. We were going to complain when we handed the keys in but nobody was there to complain too. We did complain to Hoseason's but sadly never got a response. We will not be going there again.
