Loved the hotel and the room, very clean and homely! Unfortunately on arrival they had not received the booking via Lastminute.com. This seemed to inconvenience them and from then on the service at diinner and breakfast was poor. We waited 45mins to give our dinner order which was for my partners 50th Birthday. I had booked this in advance and was told they didn't do a birthday cake but would have a sparkler in the desert. Nothing! We arrived for breakfast at 9am and was completely ignored until I asked if we could order our breakfast at 9.35am. Other customers had arrived at the same time as us had been served and finished their food! No apology was given! Very disappointed as this was my birthday treat for my partner. Wouldn't use the hotel again!

I was really expecting to receive something standard and certainly wasn't looking for anything over the top. The welcome was ok and we were taken to our table by friendly staff member. Shae walked away without taking a drinks order nor handing over menu. We waited for 10 minutes when another staff member asked if all was in order, "No it isn't" Finally a third staff member was sent over to take our drinks order and a fourth then came with menus. Some time later our order was taken. We waited and waited, finally the starter appeared; for me and my sister we shared a camembert with what were described as croutons. The cheese was still in its box and had clearly been microwaved; I then had to fight with it so that my sister had at leats some starter. The main course then arrived an hour after our arrival; I was very disappointed with the "Huntsman's lunch" basically a ploughmans. Equally my sister's chicken pie was practically bereft of any chicken meat, vegetables were over cooked and potatoes undercooked.
I don't normally write reviews by this place was so disappointing here I am writing away.
On a final point the Gents stunk as only a gents can stink. With no soap. That part of the establishment is definitely in line for a serious makeover. Sorry, The George, but I will be passing you by in future

We went for dinner quite late (9pm). There were plenty of tables to choose from as it was quite empty. The staff were friendly enough. The food was okay - mushroom pasta fairly bland. Tuna sandwich - fresh. Kids pasta - uninspiring with a huge dollop of coleslaw in the middle of a kid's salad. We stuck with it as we were not asked if everything was okay, and didn't have the energy to return it to the bar.
We did have the added bonus of a Morris Dancers band practising their music, which picked up an otherwise a luck lustre dinner/ambience.
I think this place is better for lunch due to its riverside setting.

Nice clean smart looking exterior, plenty of outside space. Our room had just been refurbished I think, very clean and tidy. However, we were on the front of the pub and the road was quite noisy - we were not able to sleep with the window open thus a bit hot. Food 'pub grub' ok but not outstanding. when we got home I noticed that I had been overcharged on my bottle of wine by about £7 but too late to do much about it. Breakfast standard stuff - some fruit would have been nice. No very good reason to return as this was a stop over en-route

Room Tip: avoid a room on the main road (front) of this country pub

Difficult one to review. The service was excellent, the pub's charms are a bit faded. It's location is delightful,it's menu a bit uninspiring. However the pastry and the filling in the pie was delicious'Be warned, the portions are enormous. All in all, as stated in the title,it is what it is, good honest British food, very well served

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary after a day at longleat. The outside of the hotel looked beautiful and so did the inside but the bedroom let it down, we stayed in room number 8 and even though it does have a double bed it was a very small room. The bathroom was beautifully done up and modern, but the toilet roll holder was coming off the wall. Bedroom window would not stay open. We stayed in the restaurant for our evening meal and the starters we had were fab but we ordered steak and I asked for mine well done but came out chewy and very burnt and didn't check how your meal was. The breakfast in the morning was brilliant, great service and came out quickly. The staff who were there we're brilliant and friendly. We were very disappointed that it was priced at £90, we were not willing to pay that so they gave us £20 off. We went and explained about our complaints but they didn't seem to acknowledge them. Also no signal in rooms.

Room Tip: Don't get number 8 room.
