As above, Booked online pending our visit back to the UK after 6 years in New Zealand. Wanted to remember our travels in rural England, Great place. 4 poster bed. Staff friendly. Food was as good as anywhere we have eaten around the world (recommend mushroom and pepper sauces). Staff (and locals) gave us directions to car park for cell phone network coverage. We stayed in room 10. Private and quiet. Loved the character which is missing in new motels. Wished we could have stayed longer. Makes you want to come back.....(mmm maybe not.....love New Zealand too much !!)

Room Tip: Room 10. In back of premises and away from main road. Includes 4 poster bed and is good size with bi...

The George looks to be a beautiful country inn from the website but it is actually sited on a busy main road in the village of Longbridge Deverill. On arrival, this my be somewhat disappointing but just hold on to those pangs of disappointment for while.
The welcome is pleasant and very polite. The rooms are currently being upgraded with some very comfortable and some awaiting the attention. The rooms overlooking the car park are very pleasant, well appointed and comfortable. There is a down-side to these rooms as the smoking area is directly below them and can be very noisy late into the night - not ideal.
The bar and restaurant are very pleasant indeed - good beer and very good food.
The staff are also lovely - very polite, cheerful and willing to help in any way possible.
The prices are what you would expect both for accommodation and food and drink particularly when you consider that this is a key 'holiday area'.
We enjoyed the stay and would use this inn again for a future visit.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms over the car park and not near the busy main road.

We had a meal the other evening and oh dear, it was really dull, very mediochre. The service was pleasant enough but very slow, we could see other people waiting too. The lamb shanks seemed to be the ones that come in catering plastic packs - that mean you can call it 'home cooked' but really it means 'home warmed up'. The 'blueberry and rosemary jus' was good old fashioned thick brown gravy with not a hint of the stated ingredients! Veg were so perfectly formed and tasteless (though I grant you they were crisp) that they MUST have been frozen. If they werent then you have a problem! Come on George, there's plenty of excellent competitors around you and they'll be getting my custom next time.

I stayed here with my wife and two young children in a 'family room'. The name of the room would suggest it was suitable for a family, but that couldnt have been further from the truth.

Now, I must add before I go on, all the staff were excellent and very friendly (I feel bad leaving a negative review, becuase they were so good!), and the decor and cleansiness was great, and the location perfect for a trip into Longleat so no other quarms other than the room itself......

Room 11 is located at the end of the building on a corner with windows on both sides of the room. On one side you have the main road with cars hurtling pass at great speed and is directly oppoosite a petrol station. Now if that wasnt bad enough, on the other side of the room the windows look out onto the main entrance where not only do you get loud noise from people coming and going until late into the night, its also where the drinkers come and smoke, drink their drinks and have a good old chat (with plenty of swear words!). Considering the room is on the 1st floor, the cars, the people, the smoke fumes might as well be in your actual room as its so loud.

Finally at 00.30, the lights to the bar went out and we finally got some intermitent sleep in between the 40 ton trucks driving pass.

Family room at £115 per night. You got to be kidding. Whats so frustrating is that there are several family rooms and from what we could tell all at the same rate, so we were just very unlucky to get this room 11 and couldnt help but feel like we had a rough deal.

Like I said though, staff, decor all great just avoid room 11!!!!!

Room Tip: Avoid 11. If you get room11 politely say good bye and run. run quick

Fab hotel, lovely staff, didn't eat here but did hear lots of compilments from others raving about the food. Large free car park. Breakfast was too late for us at 8-10, needed to get on the road. Lovely decor in the room, very minimilistic but stylish!
Will definetly be back!

A really quaint old coaching inn situated just adjacent to the A350, this hotel/restaurant is very typical of the chocolate box style cottages in the area, just beautiful. My room was clean and reasonably comfortable, with tea/coffee and still/sparkling water freely available. The room was surprisingly modern and bright, but not spoiling the charm elsewhere in the hotel area, which in contract was typical old oak beams.

The reception staff (Sally) were very cheerful and pleasant, but unfortunately the breakfast appeared to be a struggle to obtain. Two members of the staff saw me sat in the breakfast area, but for what ever reason chose to ignore me. Eventually I did get my breakfast, which was too a very good standard, although shame about the barely toasted brown bread.

Still overall a very nice hotel and worth a visit, even if you just plan to have a meal/drink

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the roadside.
