“Good place in the country”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

My wife and I stayed here midweek for 2 nights. It's a quiet local pub in a small Wiltshire village near Warminster (Upton Lovell)
An ideal location for walking / cycling/ mountain biking offroad on the quiet byways, chalk downs and ridges.
The pub itself is situated on the banks of the small river Wylye, a chalk stream with brown trout, the garden is adjacent the river and sunset over the river is marvellous! Plenty of parking available.
The room (No 1) which we had was fine except that there was a kitchen fan below the room which operated intermittently all night! Otherwise it was very quiet and peaceful... The room was adequate but not 5 star, the en suite bathroom contained a shower within the bath, not separate but it ok.
We ate in the restaurant for one night, the menu was limited but ok, there are other pubs in nearby villages (The Dove Inn at Corton) which have a better menu at similar prices.
Overall we would stay again but choose another room.

Room Tip: ASk about a room not above the kitchen, certainly not number 1

Found this gem by chance,we stopped for lunch on a lovely summers day and what a surprise a quintessential english scene,a river running thru at the bottom of the garden..river Wylye i was told by the very helpful waitress. The food was good, fishcakes, pork roll and chicken salad were served with a smile. Its a shame we dont live in driving distance to use the pub more frequently.Well doneto the staff for a very pleasant welcome.

We live near Bath, and have been meaning to have lunch here for ages, so was glad when we finally had an excuse. Chef Andy Lee did us proud. Really good food, imaginatively presented, and the staff were very pleasant. 'The Leo', as the locals call it, seems to draw a lot of people from the Warminster area, but it's only about 10 minutes away from the A303, so would also be handy to break the journey from London to the South West. The dining-room is modern and comfortable, but try to choose a sunny day (remember those?) so you can be out in the charming little garden beside the River Wylye. You can almost see Mr Toad and Ratty messing about on the bank!

Myself & my mum stayed here when on a short visit to the area. It is set in a lovely village next to the river.
The staff were welcoming & gave an excellent service, the room was nice & well equipped.
We enjoyed a very reasonable evening meal after a busy day at nearby Longleat.
The breakfast was lovely & scrambled egg was amazing!!
I would definitely return & recommend to friends.

We have tried many times to eat in this pub due to the recommendations but on every occasion we have been turned away. We have tried lunchtimes and evenings at the start of service, mid point and toward the end. On every occasion the pub was less than half empty with plenty of tables free but it seems that they don't want the custom. The pub seems to prefer large group bookings rather than couples or small families even though this puts their staff under terrible strain. The final straw was when we went to celebrate my partners birthday but they had closed the kitchen more than half an hour early "because the staff need to be able to enjoy the sun". The landlady could not even face me. They had only done a two hour service - on a sunny Sunday lunchtime during peak holiday time!

My suggestion would be to try The Dove at Corton half a mile away - much better! I know where we will be going in future.

You either have to be lost, or to know where you are to find the Prince Leopold. We were with friends from Warminster, and they knew just where we were. The seclusion belies the excellence of this place; the crowded car-park bespeaks the recognition of excellence. We were there for a, sadly, hurried lunch. The service was good, the food creative and very nicely presented. We visited with the owner before going to our table. The Public Room as you walk in feels like a village pub. You go through a hallway and find yourself in a very nice Bistro overlooking a gentle stream. No wonder it was hopping busy on a rainy June Friday.

Perfect spot for lunch - weather was good enough to allow us to sit in the garden right on the banks of the river Wylye. Good menu which apart from the usual fare included about a dozen meze dishes - you could pick out 5 for £14 - good value we thought and well presented on a slate tray. Interior of the pub looked smart with plenty of seats in the restaurant overlooking the river. Nothing much else in the village....apart from a disused red telephone box next door to the pub which now serves as an 'honesty' library - quirky but what a great idea !
