“A pleasant stay”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

We stayed at The Stag from the 5th - 8th December and had a very pleasant stay. The staff are excellent and nothing was too much trouble for them. Accomodation is good although be aware if you are not used to traffic noise then you need to avoid some of the rooms facing the A46. We were moved and greatly appreciated the effort the staff made.
Food was of a good standard and breakfasts filled us for the day!
Well worth a visit.

We just returned from a 2 night stay a Birthday treat . Excellent value. Room 9 a split level suite 2 tv's ,comfortable bed ,old beams and great decor. Some road noise as prior comments advise. We both slept ok the room was warm and welcoming on a cold night. We arrived early evening so we booked a table for dinner.
We stayed in each evening as the food ,steaks on Saturday then roasts on Sunday were excellent and good value . Peroni on tap another reason. The breakfast choice was varied ,English full ,great and very tasty,as was the egg, cheesy, ciabatta as another option. We were impressed and with friends have booked a night over Xmas for a further visit .We had the last 2 rooms at a fantastic rate given the period and look forward to going back. Country pub at its best!

Room Tip: No bath in room 9 ,ok if you shower. Room 6 has a bath and big shower ! 7,8,9 are upstairs 1-6 out i...

Many Thanks to Sheila and Simon for a wonderful stay. A very warm welcome and very hospitable staff made our visit a very enjoyable experience. Room 1 was a pure delight with the Olde English touch, cast iron spiral staircase, leading to a beautiful beamed bedroom and bathroom. Very romantic for couples and excellent value for money. Breakfast was superb, excellent choice and can not fault in anyway.

Service for food and drinks was quick and efficient. Sheila was very helpful with directions and the places to visit in Stratford Upon Avon.
On reflection, excellent base to stay, warm friendly staff, would highly recommend the Stag.

Room Tip: For couples under 60 Room 1 has that romantic feel factor, with the added bonus of a lounge area dow...

I have had plenty of business trips in the area with plenty of disappointing hotels. Pleasantly surprised with the Stag. Room was absolutely great with en suite, Chesterfield sofa and 40" TV. WiFi that actually worked to a point where I could use the internet. Only down side was the road noise - it wasn't the worst but if they can refit hotels near an airport to stop the noise then maybe they should of gone a step further with this refit. Food well presented and a good range. Real Ale a definite bonus and very well kept.
It is definitely on my list when back in the area.

I am afraid this place was just awful. On arrival, not the least bit welcoming. Told to book a table for dinner as they were likely to be busy in the evening. Went down for dinner at 7pm, order taken at 7.30pm, starter arrived at 8pm, still waiting for main course at 9.05pm. When asked the staff was there a problem in the kitchen, the response was, ‘Yes, we were not busy the last two weekends so there was not enough staff laid on this weekend’. The next morning we were the first people down to breakfast. On opening the containers of fruit, the melon container had a long black hair lying on top of the melon. There was not even an apology. On checking out of the hotel, no questions were asked as to how our stay had been, just took the money. Our bathroom floor in the room we were staying in was dirty. I took a picture of the state of the toilets in the bar but have decided not to post it, it suffices to say they were also dirty!

Before I start, let me just make one point - The Stag sits on the A46 between Stratford upon Avon and Alcester and the A46 is a very busy road. Went with the better half to visit a part of the country that we haven't been to for a long time and chose to have along weekend with The Stag as our base. Recently refurbished and with a new landlord, this is an impressive hotel owned and operated by Greene King. It isn't a particularly large hotel, only nine rooms but well appointed, decorated and furnished to a standard exceeding more expensive establishments, with everything beautifully clean. Varied evening menu, not over priced and all food cooked and presented to a very high standard - breakfast magnificent and the only hotel I have stayed in recently that manages to serve the bacon well cooked and everything that should be served hot - hot! Simon and Shirley are excellent hosts, welcoming, friendly and willing to do whatever it takes to make your stay enjoyable. Free wifi as advertised but a bit of a faff to connect to "the cloud" although good speed once connected. Only one complaint - directed at the brewery rather than the hotel - it's a Greene King house, so where was the Greene King beer? Only IPA on tap, where was the Abbot and what about IPA reserve in bottles? Fully recommend this hotel and will return sometime soon.

The superior room is to die for...

AMAZING VALUE FOR MONEY!!!
Excellent arrangement of accommodation gives you that 'home-from-home' feel. The 'cottage-style' rooms are situated separate to the restaurant/pub itself, so you can literally park your car outside and walk a few steps to your front door!!

****RECCOMMENDED*** if it's available, try and opt for room 1, it is the 'superior room' and is on 2 floors! Just like a little house! Living room downstairs with Chesterfield sofas with large LG plasma tv on the wall, great yellow mood lighting to creat that perfect Cosey atmosphere.
There is a metal spiral staircase up to the bathroom and bedroom... Incredibly comfortable, clean bed with another smaller wall hung LCD TV to match. (Built in DVD player)
Bathroom hiding an amazing roll top bath. All in all it had amazing character, and really does put you in the mood for a few days in Stratford-upon-avon.

The pub itself has a modern, 'bistro-style' feel to it, although the area and the premises are old, it has been cleverly presented to give an amazing modern atomosphere, incredibly inviting.

It's family run, great staff attentiveness.. Good wine choice, food was great and amazing value (surprisingly affordable actually, think we had 2 x 3 course meals, with drinks and a bottle of mid range rosé and it came to around £50!)....

Any 'special requests' were granted with pleasure I.e taking food/drinks back to our room etc.

Oh... And you couldn't ask for anymore from the free breakfast they put on for you!!

(Only MINOR negative, if you intend to use the DVD player in the built in bedroom TV, ensure there is a remote as you cannot operate a DVD without it. My wife fell ill one day, so I bought us a selection of DVDs for an afternoon of rest, only to (via a phone call to reception) discovered a previous guest had stolen the remote and a replacement was on order.the DVDs were redundant, I wasted £25, and had to spend the afternoon watching Dave. :/ But I'm sure this has already been rectified)

9.5/10
