Attraction details
Owner description: Coughton Court has been home to the Throckmorton family for 600 years, this finest of Tudor houses stands testament to a family's courage in maintaining their beliefs. From a position of high favour to one of fear and oppression post-Reformation, the Throckmortons were leaders in a dangerous age, helping to bring about Catholic emancipation in the 19th century. Explore this story of fascinating personalities through the 'family album' of portraits and Catholic treasures around the house. Coughton is still very much a family home with an intimate feel: the Throckmorton family live here, managing the stunning gardens which they have created.

“A Very Enjoyable Visit”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

As we are NT members we called here on our way home from an Easter visit to Stratford upon Avon. There was an excellent welcome from the reception volunteers who explained the layout of the site.
The house has a fascinating history which you can easily check out for yourselves. The view from the top of the turret tower is wonderful.
We planned only to stop for an hour or so but stayed much longer. As we visited over Easter 2013 when it was very cold the garden was rather bare. However, in the late spring or early summer the garden will be superb.
We had some cake and coffee in the restaurant and again this was very good.
Overall, one of the best NT houses that we have visited; highly recommended.

“Coughton Court”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

We have enjoyed two trips to Coughton Court near Alcester. A beautiful stately home of great historical interest for young and old. It's Priest holes and historic links to the gunpowder plot give it instant romantic and educational value. On our first visit our guide was so enthusiastic and was a joy to listen to. We also enjoyed a very nice afternoon tea and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves just wandering through the gardens. On our second visit we had tickets for Christmas Wassail evening presented by the Crescent Theatre, Birmingham. We all sat in the main hall with the Christmas tree standing majestically by the huge open fire. The atmosphere in the house was quite different at night, hauntingly beautiful and you could just feel the history surround you. The entertainment and the venue were just delightful...a night to remember. Yes Coughton Court is well worth a visit.
