“Dorset House, The Cottage”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We stayed in the Cottage for a week, We, being 2 couples luckily we are all very good friends,,,,
CONS:The "second" bedroom was off the living room, only separated by a curtain. The down stairs bathroom was VERY small, also the hot water pressure kept falling so the water temperature kept going hot and cold !! The Cottage was advertised as "indoor pool" But the pool belongs to the next door neighbours, so you have to book and pay them for the use of the pool.

PROS: Brian and Pamela were helpful and wonderful hosts and Alcester is a great little town to explore and only being a 5 minute walk away, with lots of interesting shops and café's.

We stayed here at the weekend for my friend's hen do and had a wonderful time. There was plenty of room for the 13 of us with the bonus of a large dining room and living room which was a comfortable fit to have everyone together at once.

There were loads of bathrooms and plenty of cutlery, crockery and glasses for us all. While the kitchen was fairly small, it wasn't a problem at all and we had the bonus of having good weather and so we were able to enjoy the outdoor space too.

Location-wise it's in a great spot to enjoy all the pubs and shops of Alcester and the car park was an added bonus.

Brian and Pam were great hosts and made us feel very welcome without being too 'in your face' over the weekend.

I'm surprised by some of the less than positive reviews on here as we had a lovely time and I would thoroughly recommend the house to other big groups.

we stayed in the cottage, whilst not as historic as the main house was comfortable and adequately equipped. well postitioned for local attractions eg. Straford, Warwick and the NEC
All amenities at hand, the owners being friendly, helpful and considerate.
we will definitely return.

This property is also known on some websites as Alcester house. The owners run a B&B onsite and allow guests staying there to have keys to the front door of the house we rented. This means that lots of people walk through the house at any time that pleases them either to visit the owners or to stay at the B&B. We did not feel that it was safe to leave our valuables so carted them around with us everywhere. The final straw was when we found a lost guest from the B&B wandering around the bedrooms late at night. He had let himself in the front door but then turned into our house rather than the B&B by mistake. When we politely asked the owners not to hand out keys they were puzzled by our attitude and said that they simply couldn't understand it.

Alcester is a lovely place to stay and the house was clean and warm but our peace of mind was wrecked by the security issue. In addition the kitchen was not really big enough to cater for such a large crowd. We hired a house with 10 bedrooms but mysteriously ended up with only 8. Parking the cars was an interesting exercise - a bit like one of those puzzles where one square is missing and you have to keep shuffling all the pieces round to find the picture. I'm amazed that we all still have bumpers and wing mirrors.

Having the owners on site should have been a benefit. But unfortunately their attitude and habit of handing out keys to all and sundry were very unhelpful. In addition they did not respect our privacy and kept coming into the house to complain about the sound of the kids playing.

In the end we simply felt cheated - there's no way that we would have booked the house if we had known what it was really like.

Room Tip: Book somewhere else!

Beware before booking this property. We booked June 2011 3 interlinked cottages which should have had 10 bedrooms with lots of bathrooms 2 of which should be ensuite. On arrival we got what was 1 property with 8 bedrooms, no ensuite. On complaint there was no apology. They had booked the cottage which did have 2 bedrooms and 2 ensuites to another family who kindly told us they had only booked December 2011 which is 6 months after us. Also we thought the property was called Alcester House, it was not until afterwards we found out it was called Dorset House which is strange, so we were not able to find negative posts?

Not on any website or literature I have seen was there any mention that the owners live in the middle of the accommodation or that there is communal access right through the middle of the main house. Nor is there a mention that the owners run a B&B which meant that we had a stream of strangers who had been given keys comming through our accommodation. This communal access strangely ran inbetween the lounge area and dining room/tiny kitchen part of the house. When you book a property you would imagine you have sole use of it entirely, not so here, we have been very misled. There is a huge security risk at this house to both your personal belongings and personal safety as we found a strange man walking around the upstairs of our property at 11.30pm while lone children and females were sleeping; he had been given a key by the owners and had lost his bedroom! Upon complaint the next morning we were told by the owners that we should keep the doors between the lounge and dining/kitchen part of the house locked at all times, since they give keys to family, friends and visitors and it was our fault. Very poor customer service indeed, they had no understanding as to why we were so upset by a complete stranger wandering at night outside our bedroom doors.

Having owners on site should only be a positive thing, but in this case not so as they seemed not to care at all about our lack of bedrooms, bathrooms, or the invasion of privacy by complete strangers at all times of the day. Extremely intolerant of childen as they live under part of the property and could not hear the TV when the childen were laughing and playing above (in the room THEY allocated). Upon complaining to us about our noisy childen they did not even knock but just opened our door, imagine if we had just walked into their part of the house with no knock.

I hate to leave a negative report about any property but we feel completely taken for a ride and misled regarding the property and would not want anybody to book this house without knowing what it is really like. So if none of the above worries you then book away as the town of Alcester is really lovely and most of the people we met were really charming.

Wonderful cottage complete with everything you'd need for a quiet week away. Stunning location with a huge garden full of wildlife but also in the heart of Alcester which had everything we needed, pubs, cafes and shops. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The cottage itself has a wonderful inglenook fire place and the most amazing bedroom upstairs. Will certainly be staying again.
