“Perfect Base In Llandeilo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2009

Just got back from a weekend at the Cawdor & very impressed.
Kidwelly room stylish, though maybe the windows need a sand & paint. Plenty of space & big window looking onto main street (and a balcony). Bathroom very impressive (check out that double-head shower).
Very cosy, popular & well-stocked bar and lounge very comfortable. We sat down for a moment in front of the fire with the papers after breakfast & were there for hours.
Breakfast very good (properly poached eggs & quality bacon) but the evening meals are the real stars.
£17.50 got us 3 courses of inventive & well-cooked food. We went to Y Polyn the next night & were disappointed to have to drive so far, pay more money & have one of us unable to drink. Cawdor had spoiled us.
We even came back after we'd checked out (and walked to the excellent Dinefwr House) for Sunday lunch.
The hotel is right in town (though not noisy) and seems popular with locals too.
Staff are friendly & attentive without being in yer face.
Free wireless & parking very handy too.
We also recommend the White Horse over the road (real ales), Ollie's cafe (chicken Caesar salad is excellent) and (though not religious) the church is interesting.
Llandeilo is a pretty little town & Cawdor is the perfect place to stay.

We've just arrived back from a 2 night stay in no.19 suite in the Cawdor. We've stayed in hotels all over the world and I can honestly say the bedroom we had exceeded many we have stayed in previously. It was huge - even as a suite and the bathroom was something else - I'm not sure I've ever seen a shower as big.
We dined in on the 1st night and the menu was varied and amazingly good value for money £17.50 for 3 courses. The food was delicious, the wine excellent and the service attentive without being in the way.
We only live an hour away from the Cawdor but would return without a doubt.

You must go inside the building to appreciate it. The rooms have fantastic bathrooms and big beds. Don't expect A/C, as the building is very old, but the windows do open. The bar area is nice with lots of big comfy leather sofas. The restaurant food is excellent and plentyful and there was a special deal on when we were there 3 courses £12.50 excellent value for money. All staff were very helpful, will definately stay again.

Having heard rave reviews from friends about The Cawdor I thought i would try it for myself. Firstly the parking is an absolute nightmare (though it is free to guests). You have to drive past the hotel, up a lane well you get the picture! after you have parked there is huge metal staircase to negotiate, in this instance, in the rain and with 2 largish suitcases. Check in was smooth, the receptionist was very friendly and carried one of bags to the room. Our room (Cossan) was in the courtyard, so yet more metal steps to climb....but once there i was pleasantly surprised. Wooden flooring, a huge bed, dressing gowns, plenty of tea and coffee stuff and molten brown shower gels in the bathroom. Ah... the bathroom was lovely a huge bath and shower with plenty of towels provided and also a fair sized sink. This room looked over the High St but the traffic noise was minimal. We were there for a family get together and I have to say the food was outstanding. I have eaten in some of the supposedly best restaurants in London and The Cawdor matched them effortlessly. There was also a well stocked bar and the wine list is extensive. The bed was extremely comfy (if you like soft matresses) and there was a fan if it got a bit hot. Breakfast was lovely and served at a reasonable time. Checkout was just as smooth as check-in. I would stay here again if only for the food! If i have one complaint it would be the lack of a night receptionist. We needed extra loo roll at 6.30am (they had only provided one roll) but had to wait until 7.30am for someone to answer the phone. But thats a small point. We booked this room at a discounted rate but i think we paid what it was worth. I would have been disappointed if I paid the full rate for this room as I have paid less for more in London.

We continue to rate the overall experience at The Cawdor as being one of the best around.
Sure it is not perfect (no-one being around to answer the reception phone, etc does seem a little odd) - but being realistic, it's a great place to unwind and relax.
Even better, in these tough times they have sensibly offered a deal on Sunday evening of £75 for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast.
We booked the deal and it was a great success. The rooms are above the courtyard with a slippy, fire escape stairway (not ideal but manageable) but it is worth it as they are really lovely - spacious and private. We took a guest so we had both rooms and it was a great success. The restaurant meal was fine with plenty of choices and big portions. Breakfast as always a treat. Staff friendly and well trained. Other guests always diverse and interesting (if a bit loud!).
Overall, the Cawdor is not perfect and it suffers from some small annoyances but compared to the rest they do a great job and when we are there even the rain can't dampen our spirits. Recommended.

That much vaunted refurbishment of 2005 brought this old hotel right into 1973. With the exception of the modern shower and the energy efficient lightbulbs with their attendent dimness everything was very basic. There was a wardrobe with a room safe and hairdryer but no where to put small things; a telephone but neither notepad nor writing implement; Molton Brown bodywash and hairwash bolted to the wall but no other amenities. The restaurant closed one night because the dining room was rented out. Very expensive for what we got. However, the waiter at breakfast went out of his way for us, very kind and efficient.
