Wow what a nice place. It felt as if we were having dinner at someone's house. The staff was super nice and the food was unreal. Not a huge menue but had plenty of chocies. Very quiet, not for families with small children.

We visited the Pheasant on a Tuesday evening for an important birthday celebration, with high expectations after two previous pleasant experiences.

The welcome was luke-warm at best. We had booked for 6.30, but there appeared to be only one member of staff on duty (the manager?), who occupied himself in getting things ready generally for the evening. The general atmosphere was very dull.

It was not until about 7 p.m. that our order was taken. A few minutes later we were informed that there were no ribeye steaks, although we were the first customers of the evening, and the dated menu specifically mentioned these. We were asked to choose an alternative, including the option of sirloin steak, which three of our party chose. When these arrived, all three were overcooked, and not as specified by us. Two of them were so tough that we could not cut through them and so sent them back. The waitress returned five or so minutes later claiming that the steaks were not tough, as the chef had tried them, and returned one of them to the table! She blamed the low light levels for the appearance of them being overcooked. We felt awkward, as the staff seemed to be accusing us of lying. We were told to try and eat some in front of the waitress! She then conceded that they were tough and offered an alternative. We chose fish and chips, which were acceptable, The venison ordered by one of us turned out to be two slices of reconstituted meat in a round sausage shape, another disappointment.

Aspects of the meal were OK, including the black pudding and the puddings. However, even more disappointing than the standard of the food was the attitude of the staff. To add insult to injury, when the bill was presented, the manager (?) explained that he would be charging us for one steak and one fish and chips, implying still that we were lying about the condition of the steak. He was cold and unfriendly, but reluctantly agreed to remove the steak and charge us for what we had actually eaten. In short, what should have been a lovely evening of celebration was spoiled. We shall not return.

I don't think we can offer any excuses here. The welcome should have been more attentive; the steaks should have been replaced without question (whatever the rights and wrongs, the customer is right; our job is to react quickly and positively).

So, many apologies to David Y and please be assured that I will ensure the team understand where they went wrong on each issue.

On arrival we spotted our friends enjoying a drink by a log fire. We had a Kier Royal before being shown to our table. We enjoyed a relaxed lunch which was og good quality at a fair price.
We were not hurried and i was impressed by the good selection of wines on offer.
I look forward to a repeat experience.

I am mindful that I am more inclined to write bad reviews than good ones and I really aim to correct that. The problem is that often places are just, well mediocre, or just well.. ok, which does not really put you in the mind to let forth. The Pheasant is a lovely place however and easy to write about. I went there with an old friend, the food was lovely, the wine list is excellent, the service was good, the dining room excellent, I really dont have any thing to say other than it really is very good, four out of five I say. I am delighted that a pub of this quality is in the area, I hope this drives up quality in the area.

Visited the Pheasant with work colleague at lunchtime and had a wonderful experience. There was a friendly welcome and we sat comfortably in the bar area with drinks & menus. We ordered from the daily menu which was good value - £19.95 for 3 courses - and when they were ready to serve lunch, our drinks were taken for us through to the light and airy restaurant. (The main menu selection was also good and quite extensive).

The food was well presented and exceptionally tasty. All courses were first class and the staff were all attentive and amiable. I would recommend the Pheasant and hope to return soon.
