Canal Court Hotel & Spa

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 19, 2005

I was one of a group of 16 visiting the hotel for a course for work, arriving before lunch and staying until after breakfast the following day. Our bedrooms/ensuites were very good, clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, we did not have a room with a view which we would have liked. Looking out of our window, we were greeted by another sloping rooftop. Only when we craned our necks round out of the window could we see anything that looked remotely interesting.
All meals were of a very high standard, and we certainly had plenty to eat. We spent the evening relaxing and unwinding in the bar overlooking the canal. Myself and a collegue ventured out for an enjoyable walk around the area. Newry seems to be quite an old town, with 2 new good shopping centres. I don't think there is enough there to encourage anyone to stay longer than a few days, but if you like history, there's plenty there.
I visited the swimming pool, jacuzzi and steamer before breakfast which was clean and not too busy at that time of day.

It was a very enjoyable stay, with no complaints. My only critisism perhaps is that it is a big hotel with one major stair-case and I think two minor ones. It was quite easy to get mixed up as to which direction to go in at times, which was quite annoying and time-wasting.

We all enjoyed our stay at the Canal Court Hotel.

The Canal Court Hotel, well first impressions were its the biggest building in Newry City. Not to rubbish the Hotel but Newry is no City, its about the size of Rainham in Kent where I am from. Newry was granted city status in 2000 by the Queen, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland a city from each region was chosen. Northern Ireland being so small ended up getting Newry nominated. Of note at the time was that its Sinn Fein /IRA Town Mayor refused to meet the Queen. The attitude of these people shows all the time, my English accent was met with scorn.
Food in the Hotel was acceptable, apart from their so called late night room service, dried out sandwiches evidentally saved from earlier in the day and sold to guests at inflated rates. Generally expect the taste of the deep fat fryer with all your meals---. Again not to speak out against the Hotel, but Newry is a Horrible town, we saw several fights on the streets, litter and graffiti everywhere. We did not feel at all safe walking around this place at the weekend. We decided to return to the Canal Court about 11.30, we were met with cross looking door staff, and when we eventually got in we were faced with what seems like the locals fighting inside the bar. There were even people being sick at reception. At least we were able to retire to our bedroom, which was clean. When we got to the room we could even hear the people biside us arguing. All in all not to be recommended. Drive past Newry

Having never stayed in Newry, and not really knowing where the Hotel was, I was really impressed by the welcome and attentiveness of the staff at the Hotel. From the moment I entered the Hotel I felt welcomed and relaxed.

The Hotel room was excellent, extremely clean and well presented, with very comfortable furniture and layout. The added bonus was the view over the canal. The bathroom was excellent, and again to a high standard of presentation and cleanliness.

Breakfast at the Hotel was always excellent, buffet and cooked breakfast as you requested it. Meals were also of an excellent standard and the staff went out of their way to ensure everything was ok. Nothing seemed to be a problem, and you could tell they were happy in their work by their professional approach.

The Leisure centre was also an added bonus, with friendly and welcoming staff, and excellent facilities.

I can't think of one bad thing to say about the hotel, I was impressed from the minute I arrived until the minute I left 4 days later. This hotel sets the standard that many others could do with following, well done to the hard working and professional staff.

The walls were paper thin. We could hear the neighbours going to the toilet. Not flushing, actually going to the toilet!! Cupboard doors opening and glassess clinking a toast! Our compliants to reception about a room party next door fell on deaf ears until the third complaint.

The food is dated and heavy. Nothing comes without being fried, sauced or covered in something. The waiting staff were so eager to get rid of us from the restaurant at 10pm that they started setting up the breakfast things around us, pure class!!

When we returned to the hotel on the Saturday evening it was like coming home to a West End pile them high sell them cheap chain boozer! The downstairs bar was packed and the people spilled into the foyer. A bouncer was on the door who checked us off the list and looked at us like we were pond life. When we went for a coffee in the morning in the same bar the seats were are covered in grime and stains.

The is NO AREA for residents alone, no private bar, no peace. You can sit with the whole of Newry and like it or lump it.

This place feels like a local leisure facility. Kids in the jacuzzi, people getting drunk on their Saturday night out.

The room was a good size, clean, staff freindly.

Alas there is no other option at the moment it seems. Apparently a rival will be opening its doors soon. About time!
