“Fantastic from beginning to end”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

After a bad holiday experience at Christmas we really needed somewhere to restore our faith in tour operators and hotels - without a shadow of doubt we found it here! We arrived on 28 May to the most spectacular storm I have ever seen and even though we were soaking wet there's something fun about warm rain.

We had a beach villa (151) on the north side of the island which we were more than happy with; and in our opinion this was the better side of the island but everyone is different. Snorkelling was great and we got some great underwater shots of the coral and fish. Late afternoon the fruit bats start flying over the Boashi pool and they're a beautiful sight.

As far the hotel and staff are concerned there isnt a single criticism but as with all holidays there are some staff you talk to more than others - Francis in the Boashi Bar is a wonderful young man, extremely good with the children and refreshes your drinks immediately. Robin - he's the bar boss - lovely man who works very long hours - as they all do - but always takes the time to have a chat.

We wouldnt go again at this time of year because of the season however we will be going back without a shadow of a doubt within the next 2 years which is something we have never done before.

Very happy memories of a fabulous holiday which we will treasure.

Room Tip: Personal preference for a beach villa would be on the north side of the island - theres more of a be...

Returned last night having spent a week on Vilamendhoo. Previously visited at the end of October for 9 nights and stayed in a Beach Villa. We got a good deal in a Garden View Room, hence returning so swiftly and had expected to see lots of rain...but we didn't! I have visited 9 other islands previously and can safely say this is an excellent resort for it's class in terms of quality and value for money.
The weather was great and only witnessed one downpour! Almost picture-perfect for the duration.
The resort was just as good as I remember with excellent food, reef, friendly & helpful staff etc...
The only grumble would be the uncomfortable mattress.
We chose not to go all inclusive this time and we like a drink..we estimate we saved 400 dollars as a family as a result. We were travelling with a 6 year old and she also had a great time.

Would we return...absolutely. Is it worth upgrading to a beach villa...yes. We flew with Emirates and I didn't think they were a patch on BA who we normally travel to the Maldives with.

enjoy! :).

This was our first visit in the rainy season we went as a family with two small children, it was a good choice, the clouds meant the children could play out all day, and the occasional tropical downpour was quite exciting, we also got as much sun as we needed and the sea was full of plankton which brought in Mantas and Whalesharks ( Which we saw on excursions ) The resort has been upgraded since our last visit in 2010 and we were very impressed with what has been achieved, it's a lovely island with high quality accommodation and very good staff, maybe not in the Hilton category, but that's not our style or budget anyway.

Room Tip: There is a choice of water, beach, or garden rooms, we were in the least expensive garden category w...

Just returned from 2 weeks at the Vilamendhoo and must say the place was paradise. We have nothing else but praise for such a wonderful holiday. Food, Services, Accommodation were just excellent. All the staff, without exception, were fantastic. The location and Island were ideal for a relaxing holiday, not alot to do in the evening but that is exactly why we chose it! Snorkeling is out of this world. Would recommend the Shark Whale trip - just amazing and also having a Water Villa (only build in last 18 months!).

Room Tip: Water Villa

Stayed for two weeks but weather was bad and was actually rather cold there. But the rooms (had a beach bungalow) were lovely always clean and a few feet away from the sea. Loved the food and thought there was lots of variety and the only thing that I didn't really go for was the sweets which was good for my waistline!! Snorkelling was brilliant and saw wonderful things but the only gripe I have was that some parts of the beach were dirty and had lots of litter on them. Plus empty sandbags floating around. But would I go back.....heck yes!!!! Brilliant staff great service and lots of things to do even in the rain!!

I have just returned from here on the 28th May 2012 and it was wonderful. Belated honeymoon, food was superb and we ate at the asian wok and it too was fantastic. We swan with Manta rays, whale sharks and turtles and the staff were great. It was relaxing and the reef in front of the infinity pool was full of beautiful coloured types of fish. I cannot fault this resort and went with Hayes and Jarvis. Emirates airlines were the best i've ever flown. In all a truly brilliant time was had

Room Tip: Garden villa's are centrally located and quiet. 2 for one cocktail deals available 4-7pm.

We have just returned from two weeks in the Maldives - the first spent on Vilamendhoo and the second on Kuramathi (see separate review).

For the two weeks we were away (19th May to 3rd June) we were battling with the rain and wind with a few nice Maldivian sunny days between. We will not be returning at this time of year despite not being sun lovers as it also affected the snorkelling which is our main reason for visiting.

Our trip started with Sri Lankan Airlines and despite praising them in the past, we were highly disappointed this time. We booked a direct flight which was changed a few weeks before our holiday as Sri Lankan no longer fly direct to Male which meant a longer more tiring trip with a change at Colombo. The seating was good but there was no in-flight entertainment for the whole trip and the food and service (on the way out) was poor. This was followed by a sea plane flight which was excellent but despite seeking advice from Kuoni (who supplied the Wrong Advice) we were charged for 13kg over. (Despite this Kuoni as usual have offered us terrific service and we will be travelling with them yet again in the future). Sri Lankan airlines allow 30 kgs of luggage plus hand luggage. We were nowhere near that amount but over the 25kgs (including hand luggage weight) allowed by the seaplane operators. Beware as this can add a considerable amount to your costs.

It was our first time on Vilamendhoo and will not be the last!! We chose it as an inexpensive option on AI as we had read good reports about the excellent reef. We were neither disappointed with the reef which is fantastic for everyone as the access is easy and the fish abundant or the resort. .

Firstly - the reef is still in very good condition and even the visitor snorkelling for the first time will feel safe and see a wonderful array of fish from all points round the island. Without exaggeration, the clear turquoise lagoon was not more than 10 yards away from the door of our Beach Villa (room 230) and the reef drop off only a similar distance beyond that. We also took a trip and swam with a whale shark over 20 feet long twice which was absolutely amazing and we were very lucky to see one on the day we went out.

The beach and garden villas are all the same generous size, though some are semi detached and others detached. The rooms are decorated with vibrant colours and are modern and clean with large four poster beds and good mattresses. The outside bathroom has a brilliant shower and two wash basins and plenty of toiletries of good quality supplied, but also contains the toilet which freaked us a bit at first as we thought we would be hearing the neighbours ablutions!! This was not the case and you soon get used to the idea.

This has to be the best hotel we have ever been to for the buffet food. No one could have failed to find something appetising and well cooked at each meal. Breakfasts offered a feast of cereals, meats, breads, eggs of all kinds cooked while you waited, fresh cooked waffles and pancakes and even English quality bacon. Did I mention the bread - you have to taste it to believe - the Ritz would be proud to have such a bread and pastry cook. Lunch was a delight with abundant choice of salads, cold meats and various cooked dishes, including as freshly cooked pasta, rice dishes, brilliant curries etc., etc., Dinner was also a delight with just an abundance of choice every night - freshly cooked, hot and replenished by the cooks as soon as anything looked as though it was running out. Well done all the cooks - brilliant food. We did not even bother to visit the separate restaurant, the Asian Wok at the end of the island as we loved the food so much in the buffet.

Now we really must mention the waiters who were all friendly and gave brilliant and attentive service. A special mention to Narwal who must have thought he had the odd couple as we had the windows thrown open even in high winds. He was excellent and we cannot thank him enough for making our stay extra special.

Just one word of advice for the ladies - the dress code is informal on the island but you can dress up or down in the evening as is your wish. The weight allowance in your case should not involve pretty shoes though as even in the restaurant you will find sand floors and there are no pathways - only sand!! Flipflops are a much better choice.

For those who do not wish to snorkel there are two lovely pools with comfy sunbeds and a nice bar service close at hand and also a great spa which we were too busy in the sea to return to after our free back massage. Choice of drinks and daily free cocktails at the bar was very good and the bar staff were all great. You can also get a sandwich or cake (included in the AI) at the bar if you miss a meal or just cannot face any more great food!

This is where I find something to gripe about though as I said, we enjoyed everything about Vilamendhoo and will return. The island is lovely, the gardeners work hard to make the island green and colourful, the staff are friendly, the reef is excellent, the rooms are good, the food is wonderful

BUT!

The entertainment is terrible! Sorry but it is - someone needs to work hard to get this right as it will put some people off. We played Scrabble - so it must have been bad!
The rooms are very nice and the beds comfy but the towels - both in the bathroom and for the beach are a disgrace - the white ones look as if they have cleaned floors!

Also the comfortable night is spoiled by the very poor and old quality of the pillows. A restful night’s sleep is part of a relaxing holiday and perhaps it is just us Brits, but we like our pillows to be of a reasonable size and thickness to sleep properly. Such a shame that a nice comfy room should be spoiled by the lack of new towels and pillows. Come on now - everyone likes a clean looking towel and nice pillow or is it just me! It would make such a difference. Cleaning of the room was also a bit sub-standard compared to other places in the world we have visited (the room boys in Kuramathi took pride in keeping the rooms spotless). Come on management these things could easily be resolved!

Apart from these, we have few complaints and did not want to leave to go to Kuramathi as we were so in love with this island and determined that if in the future the reef is reported as still offering some of the best snorkelling in the Maldives and standards are kept reasonably high, we will be returning to enjoy the island again.

Room Tip: Anywhere on the island really. I asked for 172-190 but did not get it but 230 was brilliant and clos...
