My wife and i have just returned from Vila after a two week stay on our forth trip to the Maldives. And after reading all the reviews before going, i would say they were all pretty accurate. Our holiday was amazing. The island is very good. The food is outstanding. The house reef is one of the best we have seen. The accomodation stunning, and as has been said in a previous review "a good all rounder". In our opinion though, some areas just need a little attention to detail, before the small problems get bigger.
We flew out and back with Thomson/First choice and upgraded to premium class. This is worth it for extra leg room and a decent entertainment system, but that was about it. The seats are uncomfortable and the staff seemed to think that once the galley curtains are pulled on, no one can hear them!! The sea plane transfer was quick and is always a great experience.
First Impressions:
The island looks clean and tidy, even if lacking in beach a little, and the staff, inviting and freindly as we got took for our welcome chat then on to our Jacuzzi Water Villa.
Acccomodation:
The water villas are outstanding. They are huge in size with a spacious area out the back with a jacuzzi, perfect for getting the sun in the morning. Then a massive open air bathroom, large bedroom/sitting area with every mod-con possible ( flat screen tv, docking station, etc, neither of which got turned on!) leading out to a sundeck, which gets the sun from twelve onwards, with steps into the shallow lagoon and reef. We did personally think that one side of the villas was better protected from the ever-present wind. (i would recommend the even numbered villas on the left as you walk up the jetty.)
Food/Beverages:
We were allocated Aihma Restaurant, which is the smaller of the two AI restaurants, and is perfect. A little more intimate and with no children. The waiting staff are friendly and attentive, as are the kitchen staff, with the ever-present head chef. ( Jamil, our waiter deserves a mention, and the tips we gave him.) The food was outstanding, with a good selection, and always changing. (fresh fish to die for!) The salads were fresh, the curries tasty, meat of a high quality and deserts to be proud of ! All credit to the head chef and his team. A couple of small points....occasionally, and only occasionally, there were flies over the food, and a little back ground music in this restaurant wouldnt go a miss. We did not eat in the Funamma restaurant allocated for beach villas ( and children!!), but it looked very busy and maybe a touch cramped.
We ate at the Asian Wok on three occasions, which was excellent, both service, location and food. And we also tried the Tappenyaki night which was great for entertainment and food, if maybe a little pricey for what you get.
The Sunset bar is the quieter of the two bars, and is perfectly positioned on the beachfront. The drinks are tasty enough, ie, cocktails, etc, but the service was poor. There were many waiters but getting a drink was quite difficult. If they want us to go to the bar, thats fine, but upon approaching the bar we are told that they will come to our table. Either way, but do one or the other. (and with this, the better tips will come too). ( quite how a particular obnoxious russian managed to get paralletic and pour his whisky over my wife is truly amazing! ). The service in Funnama bar was better and in the Asian Wok ( great place just to sit and drink ) the service was outstanding.
Spa/Leisure:
My wife and I booked in for three spa treatments, all two hours long and enjoyed every single minute from start to finish. The spa itself is very classy, the girls are polite and work wonders with their magic hands!!
The other facilities such as the fitness suite, tennis court, etc are all brand new, clean, tidy and in working order.
Other things to note, was the manta/turtle excursion, which was chaos, with forty folk practically hunting down one Manta or one turtle. And the appearance of a rat while having drinks one night. It was only one and it didnt seem to bother anyone, but nevertheless things like this do put people off and if not addressed the problem will grow.
When all is said and done, this island is of a high standard, and i would reccomend it to anyone, and if your going then im sure, like us, you will enjoy. It just needs a little attention to detail.

Visit 23rd January - 6th February. We got engaged in Kuredu 2 years ago and and decided to return to the Maldives for our honeymoon. Vilmendhoo is run by the same company as Kuredu and is a smaller version.

GOOD BIT

We wanted a direct flight so went for BA (big mistake) the flight out was good - only a 2 hour delay and the transfer to Maldivian Airlines was quick, the new Vilamendhoo lounge very clean and the staff welcoming. Seaplane was a lot of fun and the welcome to the resort excellent. We were welcomed to the resort, given our orientation and shown to the room (198) jacuzzi beach villa which was clean tidy and attractive.

The food was excellent with a nice variation of food, we were there 2 weeks and did not get bored. Our waiter Meezad was very charming, spoke excellent English and was able to answer any questions about the resort or the Maldives. He had been to London to represent the resort so we had loads to chat about.

All the staff were lovely and the room boy made a big effort with flowers on our bed, and keeping the room tidy. We needed more creamer ( no fresh milk) so he sorted that out. The electric went out for 10 minutes and the fan and Jacuzzi stopped working, he called the electrician who fixed the fuse in no time at all. The gardeners will pick you a coconut and chop off the end for you to drink!

All inclusive get free soft drinks and beer from the room minibar - a bit strange but never mind. There is an all inclusive cocktail of the day in the bars.

The staff are all trained on Meeru and Vilamendhoo has a small training room for day training.

The spa was attractive and the Thai staff friendly, the Honeymoon Indulgence for 2 was superb.

We had the breezy side which was a welcome as it does get warm on the other side, the seaplanes land out at sea so the noise is fairly minimal. There is sand bagging taking place 140 - 160 at the moment which was not great but the rest of the island was OK as far as erosion goes.

Children are not allowed in Jacuzzi Beach and Water villas and they have their own child free area with swimming pool, restaurant and small bar. No evening entertainment there, but there is nightly entertainment near reception where the main restaurant, shop, library, and games room are situated. So good for both families and couples. Not many children when we were there and the ones that were did not have a lot to do as it was not school holidays.

We had a trip to a local Island for a morning which was interesting, not a lot to see, I'm glad we went. The Hot Wok had a variety of asian food and being all inclusive we got 20% off our 1st visit and did not have to pay for our drinks.

Snorkeling was out of this world, lovely reef and lots of fish so close to the shore.

Our leaving was well organised ( they only confirm the details the day before and there are only so many sea planes out so you may think you are there all day for a late flight and you have to leave earlier than you may want.)

Overall it was what we wanted - left alone on our dessert island very relaxing indeed. I'd definitely give it 5 stars.

The leaving was good - paid the room bill the night before and left in the morning - very efficient. Only 3 hour delay despite the snow. I have flown since 1966 and I had the worst experience of airline staff I have ever had.

BAD BIT

We had some nuisance passengers on the way home who were sitting with their feet against the bulk head and were pushing the seats back past where they would normally stop giving my new husband and another passenger no room. He could not put his tray down to use it and he only has a 32" waist. We did politely ask them to stop , the woman claimed to have a 'bad back' and ignored us. One BA staff member came and he asked her to stop doing it.

The woman continued to do it and then her husband started doing it to another passenger and an argument ensued. That passenger swapped seats with his wife and they did it to her. Then they started some sort of argument with 2 other couples ( not sure what that was about!) He started on me when I went to the loo.

I POLITELY asked a member of the cabin crew to intervene again she was rude, aggressive, useless, refused to do anything, told me that she 'wasn't bothered about problems with people in economy' 'if we wanted any service she suggested we travel in 1st class' She did give me a sarcastic lecture in how seats work - as I ran the technical and production side of an aviation company for over 20 years and being personally CAA approved ( manufacturing and repairing..airline seats) I am positive I am far more knowledgeable on the subject than her . I used to write procedures to manufacture airline seats!

Her tone of voice was not at all polite and I was frankly shocked at their unprofessional and out of control she was. God help us in a real emergency. She basically said that everyone in economy were.**** .....I AM SHOCKED THAT BA HAS THAT VIEW!!! SHE SAID THAT IF YOU FLY ECONOMY BA APPARENTLY THINK YOU ARE A WASTE OF SPACE!!

To resolve this my husband moved to a free seat to get some room ( we had paid extra to sit together as it was our HONEYMOON)

PS. Miraculously ' bad back' lady s back completely healed when we got off the plane and she and her unpleasant husband where last seen heaving their heavy cases off into the night.

Room Tip: 170 - 210 have a wider beach

Loved the infinity pool, excellent reef (Snorkelers paradise!), food was acceptable, staff friendly and the weather played along too :-)

Room Tip: All villas are great, but the water villas are the best (and you get what you pay for). "Walking the plank" to the room in the midday sun can be torture, especially for us who are melanin endowed. The water Villas on the south side had too much sun, we moved after 1 day. (But they have unmatched sunset views. See pictures). Water villas on the north side had no sunset views, but are a little cooler. There was no hot water in our villa for 3 days. We reported it but it was not resolved. When checking out, we learnt that we needed to keep the air conditioner on, In order to get hot water. (Some kind of energy saving system ) If so, then it’s not too clever a system because we did not want to use the air conditioner, we preferred natural air. Luckily it was very hot so we did not really need the hot water. The marine life is exceptional. Snorkelling just for 5 minutes will blow you away. It’s the Best snorkelling reef we’ve been to. You also have to go snorkelling with the Whale sharks! Heavenly experience!

We stayed at Vilamendhoo from 11th Jan to 25th Jan 2012 and the content below is our experience of our stay on this island resort. One thing to note is that all the reviews are subjective and unique to the person that wrote them.
Flight:
We flew with Thompson, direct flight from Manchester to Male. We upgraded to premium class which we found to be a good choice as the extra legroom and larger seats we a god send on a flight of 11 hours out bound and 12 hours inbound. The flights were on time on both legs.
The resort:
We stayed in a Jacuzzi Water Villa on an all inclusive package , these are excellent and well worth the extra money, great facilities within, great bed and fantastic access to the sea via your own steps and a Jacuzzi that is great to be in on a night looking up at the stars. Our room boy was the best ever he kept the room clean & well presented, dressed the bed on a morning with flower petals and kept the beer well stocked in the mini bar (Beer is part of the all inclusive plan) We ate in Ahima restaurant and the food was really good, a good choice and deserts to die for. As with previous posts if you do not like curries then the choice is limited, we love curries. Our waiter was good and attentive to our every need.
We went on a couple of trips (manta and whale shark) we were lucky in that on both trips we were able to snorkel with such fantastic creatures- we thought both trips were good value for money, however please note you are not guaranteed to spot either the manta’s or whale sharks, this is no fault of the resort these are wild creatures and don’t make appearances on request.
Overall my wife and I had a fantastic time, no issues at all with the resort, no issues with insects bites ect. and we would certainly not hesitate in recommending this resort to anyone of our friends.
However, a word of warning, please when snorkeling stay within the marker bouys as the currents can be strong towards each end of the island.
This was certainly a VERY GOOD holiday
