If you are on state highway 1 heading north or south and are passing Kawakawa then take a short detour into the town to see these unique public toilets. It's not often you get toilets designed by a famous artist/architect, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The toilets are bright and colorful and constructed from tiles.

Having public toilets as an attraction is not usual but here, anything is possible. Kawakawa has re-invented itself as a place to stop, eat and enjoy and the Hundertwasser Toilets are the catalyst with their quirky design elements. Given Hundertwasser's fame as an architect and designer, the toilets are part of his international "oeuvre" although of course, modest in scale and intent when compared with other projects. Worth a stop, a test run and a place from which to explore the locale of Kawakawa.

Constructed of mosaic tiles and quite different to most toilets I have ever frequented, and I've been in a few over my life

Bright, colourful, unique - well worth a look for all age groups. The toilets out the back are very cute too!
